There’s something very revealing about all the X comments scolding Gen Z for ordering takeout: When people talk of their frugal youth, they don’t say “I”, they say “we”. That’s because they had something huge swathes of Gen Z will never have. They had a family. Link 👇

@ARandomKaren @jemmm85517813 So revealing that every time I stand up for Gen Z, being an empathic human who cares about people other than myself, it's assumed that I'm in that generation and having these struggles myself. I'm not. The condescension dripping off your "offer" is noted though.

Anybody who says "Gen Z are lazy and don't want to work" hasn't the slightest clue of what the job market is like right now. Budget supermarkets receive hundreds of applications for 1 shelf-stacking role. There are simply not enough jobs for everyone who needs one. So what now?
Jen Wood - est optimum simpliciter@unojen_wood

What no one is mentioning in this 'whip people into wok' drive is that there are only 705,000 vacancies in the whole of the UK and that number is falling, so where are the jobs for 1.8 million people plus 957,000 'inactive' 16- 24 year olds to come from?

@MattersInformed Lmfao nooo, one of the few times I’m like “wait guys there are *some* good Boomers and Gen X”, you’re like “oops sorry no just a millennial” (I am a millennial too) 😂😂😂

Dear Gen Z, please let me speak on behalf of all sane members of the older generations who haven't developed selective Alzheimer's about the past. Life was MUCH EASIER in the 1990s. You could walk into a pub or shop in any town and come away with a job. (1/)

@MattersInformed @ManAboutMourne The tragedy is that the online push for the generation wars are making them manifest more in the real world. I mean, some discourse about the qualities of different cohorts of people has always been out there. And the boomer-hate has been going on a long time, you're right.

@FringeViews @ManAboutMourne Some maybe, but I've heard variations on these "the Millennials are spoilt" / "the Boomers are evil" themes IRL for decades. It's more online now because we're more online - and now there's another generation to argue about - but sadly the generation wars are very real.

@dmc_dmcc 🤗 I'm actually an elder millennial, not Gen X, but I remember the 90s vividly and so am fully aware of the extent of the nonsense revisionism going on at the moment.

@MattersInformed @ManAboutMourne I've never lashed out at any generation (older or younger!) nor have I labelled them as lazy or entitled or anything of the sort. I *know* it's hard, but I also know that there are ways to overcome.

@ManAboutMourne @FringeViews I totally understand why many lash out at younger generations and call them lazy. It is far preferable to believe that, because that can be corrected. It can be fixed and the person's life put back on track. If it's not that though... that's far more confronting & frightening.

@MattersInformed @FringeViews Indeed it is real and people’s attitude towards not confronting it reminds me somewhat of the scene from search for the Holy Grail. Many I believe have convinced themselves that any danger posed is not imminent and so take no action, then all of a sudden it’s at their very door.

@RealSilentMaj @midgard_misfit @JMCDelingpole We had a single club here in Huddersfield that closed down last year. There is now nowhere to go after 11pm and multiple pubs have shut in the last 6 years. Indeed, when I tried to go out for a drink on Boxing Day, I had to try 4 different venues because the first 3 were shut.

@midgard_misfit @MattersInformed @JMCDelingpole British drinking culture has been totally destroyed in last ten years. Every small town used to have at least one nightclub you could have a good night in most nights of the week. Now it’s hard to find one in central London on a Saturday. It’s completely dead, everywhere.

@bigkiitten Yes, here in the UK they were. Tuition fees weren't introduced until 1998, and even then they were only £1k a year max. Before that, university was completely free, and many students qualified for a non-repayable grant to help with living costs too.

@JohnSmi39624798 @PennyKuz Yes, she needs some sort of everywoman relatable name, something that speaks of her salt-of-the-earth noble roots, but also hints at their aspirational success, as they are able to enjoy fake holidays with Dean.

@MattersInformed @PennyKuz zomg it's my alltime fav sockpuppet! He's been plotting his return for several months, I should think. I bet that large helping of steak & kidney pie his doting wife (she really needs a name) prepared tonight gave him that final oomph..

@LummisDunc50803 @MattersInformed I hate that now to get employment I have to apply online even if I try walking to the front desk first and once I get that job, I have to be on a work WhatsApp group, and have to train on an online training platform among other things.

@PennyKuz @MattersInformed I'm sharing my opinion that you shouldn't share your opinion about not allowing others to share their opinion. It's my right as an opinion sharer, but no one else's.

@MattersInformed In all fairness this is true. I was literally thinking that the other day, that other than my kids? Very little is better now than it was 20-25 years ago. People were more present and inclined to find middle grounds. Everything just seems.. shittier. The enshitification flows

@midgard_misfit @JMCDelingpole @MattersInformed Back in the early 2000s I could go to the boozer with £20. Come home drunk having had 16 Marlboro lights out of the vending machine, a couple of games of pool and couple of 5 song blasts on the jukebox, and enough dry roasted to dehydrate a camel.

@MattersInformed @JohnSmi39624798 I'm sharing my opinion, like you and like her I've unfollowed also because you can't see your own hypocrisy even when it's staring you in the face. Thought you were a bit more sophisticated bye, bye

@MattersInformed @JohnSmi39624798 Yes, you can have your opinion, so can she and you can point fingers at the bigger victim/perp- Sorry, your words reflect badly on you same as her's do. And it's divide to conquer on both counts.

@PennyKuz @JohnSmi39624798 If others can have their opinion then I can have mine, no? I just shared her words, I didn't twist them, exaggerate them, or lie about them. If people's own words reflect badly on them, that is not attributable to any "divide and conquer" efforts from me.

@MattersInformed @JohnSmi39624798 but she is one woman, and can have her opinion- so can others. I hate this divide to conquer type stuff and you're engaging in it the same as they are.
