Beautiful alternative graduation ceremony for UVA students tonight, which concluded with Haitian scholar Robert Fatton praising our students for “not simply interpreting the world, but courageously trying to change it.”

So Longo says that it WAS abt the tents? And that if the tents had been taken down, by implication, that he wouldn’t have pressed forward in summoning state troopers? But also… that he was scared & worried abt “outside agitators” & the “temperature” heating up bc of #’s? ⛺️

To a plea by my colleague on the Faculty Senate for us to “come together” & forgive our fellow human leaders, so students can have a nice & pleasant graduation: There are NO universities in Gaza. Some of our students see THIS as a graver issue, for fellow humans.

Young people have so much to teach us, so much to teach those who actually have some power to change the rules. I hope that we listen. That we can see that the “rules” of the world we live in need to be changed. That it is possible to live in ways that are more gentle and just.

As appalling as it was to witness how all this went down, I have faith in our students. I trust them to call BS on these lessons, just as they have on all the disingenuous reasons for why a genocide in Gaza is somehow needed or unavoidable or right.

Wait, what? I am reeling from this “explanation.” It is not merely an abdication, but a violation of even the pretense of a commitment to education. If no university rule was ever changed, we would be abiding by ALL our founder TJ’s rules. Which is a reprehensible position.
