If this is indeed the final stand of the Tamil Nadu government, it is a very disappointing decision. I doubt there is any suitable 5,000 acre parcel near Chennai that doesn’t involve water bodies or farmlands. As I’ve said before, large infrastructure projects must be evaluated by weighing the larger public good against environmental damage. When the benefits are maximum and the damage is minimal, they are worth pursuing. Every major decision involves balancing development and environment. Focusing solely on the environment halts all progress. Obsessing only about development makes the environment unlivable. No mincing words. This decision is a significant setback for the development of both Chennai and Tamil Nadu. We now need to see how the government plans to deliver a world class airport for Chennai in a timely manner.
