That's not what's happening right now. SCOTUS is in the process of considering what the text says, not changing the text.

Is your argument that we can make amendments to the constitution, but only if they're additive, and that reinterpretation of those amendments is unconstitutional, but additive amendments that go against a common sense understanding of the founders isn't?

@symethurs @marcedbytruth @DavidAFrench We're conserving the text of the Constitution that any literate person can read. With the 14th amendment, there's barely even anything to interpret. People grasp at straws with the "jurisdiction" bit, but it's a colossal stretch.

You're missing the point. The constitution has been altered and reinterpreted many times in American history in a way that flies in the face of its original conception.
Appeals to conserving the constitution are incoherent. What about the constitution are we even conserving at this stage?

But anyway, this isn't about mind-reading. The amendment could easily have been written more narrowly, to address just the issue of former slaves. Instead, it's quite broad... & pretty damn clear.

And SCOTUS is tasked with preserving the Constitution. If the content of the Constitution doesn't match your values... sorry, but the Constitution wins.

I'm literally Catholic. I'd also be surprised to learn the other guy isn't Christian. Christ loves Americans and the Japanese. All of His Creation. We don't need to cynically deploy Christ in self-serving political matters though. That's not appropriate.
