In San Francisco, especially in communities that are already enduring the painful impact of aggressive federal immigration enforcement, many of us are feeling fear and anger as we witness the horrific events unfolding in Minneapolis. Yesterday San Franciscans, as they have done time and time again, made their voices heard peacefully and expressed the deep concern many are feeling right now. As our city agencies make preparations for public safety ahead of Super Bowl week and Lunar New Year and San Franciscans see more local officers on our streets, I want to be clear about our priorities. SFPD and our local law enforcement are focused on protecting public safety—including the right to peaceful expression. We will continue to uphold San Francisco’s longstanding policies that keep local law enforcement focused on keeping our city safe—not federal immigration enforcement. If you see SFPD on the street, they are there to keep you safe, not to assist immigration enforcement. San Francisco is strongest when we come together to stand up for each other and our values. That’s what makes this the greatest city in the world. We are going to have each other’s backs and keep our city safe.

Statement from the family of Alex Pretti, Michael and Susan Pretti:  “We are heartbroken but also very angry.    Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.    The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.    Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you”

I was really convinced that gastroenterology did not want me and it was painful to settle with that. But knowing myself as a person, it is not in my nature to give up. I have formally requested the Trump Administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles county and return them to my command. We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved. This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed. Rescind the order. Return control to California.
