My grandpa used to say “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” The 1st time I was old enough to get it, I said “That’s not fair!” He said “Exactly! So make it your life’s work to ensure everyone meets each other.” He’s 2 decades gone, but I’m still at it. #advocacy #MedEd

On #InternationalWomensDay, I’m grateful for the women who shape oncology every day—mentors, colleagues, nurses, research teams, and patients whose strength inspires our work. Thankful for those who paved the way and committed to lifting up the next generation.

March 4th. The only date that is also a command. It's been 19 years since my husband died of cancer & my life irreversibly changed. It took me years to feel like I wasn't drowning every minute of every day. Grief & financial toxicity gave me a mission. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamao…

📢NEW: In a study of 600,000 people published today in @bmj_latest, we found GLP-1 drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) associated with reduced risk of addiction across alcohol, opioids, cocaine, cannabis, nicotine—and 50% fewer substance-related deaths. 🧵 bmj.com/content/392/bm…

In 2023, I wrote about being a psychiatrist who lived with suicidal ideation and the need for our society to discuss suicidality openly to decrease stigma. In April 2025, I wrote about the framework I used to notify others, create goals to keep me alive, cultivate self-love, and radically accept my suicidality when it arose. In August 2025, I wrote about the framework I use to turn each and every suicidal thought from a seemingly insurmountable force into solvable components. Today, we move forward in my narrative. This time, I write to you all to share the four steps I use to navigate and continue my healing journey in the months after my suicidality goes into remission. Honored to publish in @medpagetoday with my newest piece, “Living After Suicidality: A Physician’s Framework for Healing After Their Suicidality Goes into Remission.” So much love and gratitude to @genevievefri for the stellar edits along with the thoughtfulness and care she put into collaborating on this article. New study suggests #LongCOVID may involve disrupted cortisol rhythms, not just inflammation. Patients showed: • Reduced morning cortisol • Elevated evening levels • Flattened daily cortisol cycle ➡️ Indicating hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction. 1/

🚨 Hot off the press: my new paper that moves this field forward 🚀 and changes the narrative on what #POTS, #MECFS and #LongCOVID are... Neuroimmune Disorders! 🧠 The brain and the autonomic nervous system are involved in the immune system regulation. 🧠 There is evidence of autoimmunity, immune dysregulation, cerebral hypoperfusion, neuroinflammation and other mechanisms in all three disorders. 🧠 #Neuroimmunology is a field that should embrace these disorders: #MultipleSclerosis, the staple of neuroimmunology, used to be called hysterical paralysis before CT and MRI were invented. We're at the same crossroads with these disorders. ❌ These disorders are not "mysterious", "anxiety", "deconditioning," "functional neurologic" etc. etc. ‼️ Classifying these disorders as neuroimmune and including them as part of neuroimmunology training is critical. 🛌 #PatientCare and lives of millions of people living with these disabling conditions are at stake! Thanks to my esteemed colleagues and co-authors, Dr. @TaylorDoherty8, immunologist from UC San Diego and Dr. Lawrence Steinman, neuroimmunologist from @StanfordMed, for their support! William Foege did have regrets despite all he had achieved in public health over the decades. For all his accomplishments, he had his regrets. “I should have learned more about politics. It’s the politicians who make the decisions,” he told Celine Gounder in essay @PostOpinions

IN MEMORY OF: The first time William Foege, a giant in public health, saw patients w smallpox. “They were outcasts,” he said. “I was struck immediately by something I had never read, and that was the smell. … It was similar to a dead body, that smell.” washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/…
