It’s weird how historicized, canonical figures in the arts are all flattened in the popular imagination as having lived in some strange, undifferentiated 19th century. Even the great modernists, who definitionally dwelled within a thoroughly industrialized technological paradigm, are all conceived of as some vague Victorian types who wrote by candlelight.

@Steve_Sailer Yankees vs Brooklyn Dodgers was a clash of Manhattan swells vs Brooklyn proles (the latter team was known as "Dem Bums") The Mets are the National League successor to the Dodgers, so most of their fans went with the Mets.

Cubs vs. White Sox are a pretty obvious clash of white collar vs. blue collar whites. Yankees vs. Mets are harder to figure in terms of class. When I was a kid in the late 1960s, both Dodger and Angel fans tended to be white suburbanites. I never got a handle on SF Bay rivalry.

Besides NY and Chicago (where fans of one team hate the other), and LA (where Dodgers fans don't hate the Angels), the other metro with 2 baseball teams in recent decades was the Bay Area. Did SF Giants and Oakland A's fans hate the other team?
