May I ad a counter argument or thought? P.s appreciate that response! The small-government, global free-trade model made sense in a unipolar Cold War and post-Cold War world. Fair enough, but I would argue the populist shift didn’t emerge from nihilism… quite the opposite actually; it emerged from voters who believed institutions, trade systems, and immigration frameworks were no longer serving national cohesion or middle-class stability. That reframe didn’t come out of nowhere either, it’s something many developed nations are beginning to experience with their own eyes and ears, that the systems they once trusted, had perhaps gone a little too far and not in the best interest for national identity and sovereignty. I wouldn’t say it’s abandoning conservatism so much as adapting it to a different economic and geopolitical reality—especially post war. Nihilism means rejecting meaning and moral order. What we see now is modern populism be confronted with the fact that certain institutions failed to uphold meaning and order and they wish to restore that.
