"In the future, the robots will make so many robots, that they will actually saturate all human needs, meaning you won't be able to even think of something to ask the robot for at a certain point, like there will be such an abundance of goods and services. There'll be more robots than people. I think everyone on earth is going to have one humanoid robot because you would want a robot to watch over your kids, take care of your pet, take care of elderly parents. I'm very optimistic about the future. I think we're headed for a future of amazing abundance, which is very cool. Definitely we are in the most interesting time in history." 一 Elon Musk

@mrbusysky @krassenstein OK lets just table the whole discussion until the costs of goods go down and we have overabundance. Currently, nothing in AI or Robotics is showing any indication that this will EVER happen.

@krassenstein Because it means with robots and automation the cost of goods goes down so everyone has a higher income. Not like he hasn't said this for years and in recent interviews. Not sure what everyone is getting butt hurt about now 😆

Universal Basic Services/Income would be needed. But we are $40 Trillion in debt. Who will pay for it all? An automation tax on business and a tax on data centers is a start but it comes nowhere near the amount of money necessary. How about a wealth tax on the ultra rich?
Elon Musk@elonmusk

Universal HIGH INCOME via checks issued by the Federal government is the best way to deal with unemployment caused by AI. AI/robotics will produce goods & services far in excess of the increase in the money supply, so there will not be inflation.

@srsjeff @HistoryBoomer I have ZERO confidence that will happen, seems that some people have accepted this as fact? They are driving conclusions based off a false prophecy.

It’s annoying that so many people don’t understand that prices are affected by demand AND supply. If rising supply sufficiently matches or exceeds rising demand, you DON’T get massive inflation. People ignore that rising supply (robot production) is half of Elon’s plan!
John Ziegler@Zigmanfreud

This “Universal High Income” idea is SO catastrophically bad that it makes me question EVERYTHING about Elon Musk… This is unworkable, & would cause massive inflation, fundamentally destroying the incentive structure of our society (COVID Panic on steroids). I’d like to believe Elon has fallen for this idiocy because he simply doesn’t understand normal humans and he craves free time.

@HistoryBoomer What is more annoying is that people don't understand that supply isn't going to just skyrocket because of AI and Robotics. WTF to people keep saying that? AI and Robots are not free and they are not going to create over abundance, that's just straight up hogwash.

People who say this will lead to inflation don’t understand what the economy is: People make stuff, are paid by other people who buy this stuff, and use that money to buy stuff other people make. Inflation happens when you give people more money but more stuff isn’t being made. AI/robotics will produce a lot more stuff per people, so it becomes a stuff allocation problem, which can be solved with universal high income. Universal high income is not used to make everyone rich, it’s used to redistribute consumption in a world where a lot more stuff is being made thanks to AI/robotics

A Person Who Thinks For Themself 🇺🇸
There has also never been a society where potentially AI and Robots can actually do the majority of the jobs people do either. That's the big difference here. That seems to be an inevitability at this point. It is going to be something we've never experienced before. So what do we do? Also, I said the majority of jobs. People look at the flaws of AI today (halucinations, etc.) and seem to forget everything we are seeing now has exploded onto the scene in the past few years (FEW YEARS). It's growth is phenomenal. It's improvements staggering. What will it be like in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, etc.? I can guarantee it won't be like what we are seeing after only a few years. It might actually eventually replace the need for any human jobs. So what are humans to do? Live in simulated worlds (games, videos, etc.) where they work simulated jobs?

There is no such thing as a free lunch. At no time, throughout all of recorded history, has there been any society, government, collective, which paid its citizens to do nothing yet reap some sort of reward for it. And in all cases where wealth was redistributed to such extremes as described here those societies utterly failed. Or, if they survived they became complete totalitarian dictatorships. In every case.

I don’t understand this argument. What good does “universal high income” do when all that would happen is massive inflation for the cost of goods? Awesome, now everyone’s a millionaire. And a computer now costs $20,000 because every retailer knows that everyone’s a millionaire.

@HistoryBoomer The only way production goes WAY UP is by spending more money. Where does the money come from? AI and Robotics are not free, why does everyone keep pretending that it is.

If everyone gets a million dollars AND NOTHING ELSE CHANGES nobody has a million dollars. Demand raises prices, a million becomes less valuable. BUT If everyone gets a million dollars, AND goods production goes way up, we get more stuff. We will live like today’s millionaires.

If everyone has a million dollars. Everyone can go to Disney World. Unless Disney raises the prices of a ticket, the lines would be way to long. Ticket prices must increase to make Disney World enjoyable. AI won't fix the laws of supply and demand on human experiences.

Your statement is true if goods & services output doesn’t rise dramatically due to AI/robots, but false if it does. In a normal economy, issuing more money simply increases the dollar price of the existing output of goods & services, meaning people do NOT get more stuff. If AI/robots massively increase goods & services output, then you actually MUST issue dollars to people or there will be massive disinflation. Prices are simply the ratio of goods & services output to number of dollars.

@elonmusk Universal high income funded by government checks sounds appealing, but it ignores the core problem which is who pays for it? Massive deficit spending or tax hikes to fund UBI would likely drive inflation and distort incentives, even if AI boosts productivity.
