It's really okay to marry someone, stick with them, and raise kids together. No journalist will write an edgy magazine piece about your lifestyle, but you'll have a great shot at a fulfilling and meaningful life.

@KeithNHumphreys Ontario is closing “safe” injection sites this Spring. Interesting to note that BC, which has many sites, still had about 2k deaths last year.

Across North American cities in the past two years, elected officials moving to the center on policing and drug policy have been met with dire predictions of disaster...and in every case crime and overdoses have both gone down.

Every time you get a cancer biopsy, the lab makes a tissue slide that costs about $5. It shows the shape of your cells under a microscope, and every cancer patient already has one on file. There’s a much fancier version of that test called multiplex immunofluorescence (basically a protein-level map showing which immune cells are near your tumor and what they’re doing). It costs thousands of dollars per sample, takes specialized equipment most hospitals don’t have, and barely scales. But it’s the kind of data oncologists need to figure out whether immunotherapy will actually work for you. Right now, only about 20 to 40% of cancer patients respond to immunotherapy, and one of the biggest reasons is that doctors can’t easily tell whether a tumor is “hot” (immune cells actively fighting it) or “cold” (immune system ignoring it). Microsoft, Providence Health, and the University of Washington trained an AI to analyze the $5 slide and predict what the expensive test would show across 21 different protein markers. They called it GigaTIME, trained it on 40 million cells in which both the cheap slide and the expensive test coexisted, and then turned it loose on 14,256 real cancer patients across 51 hospitals in 7 US states. The results landed in Cell, one of the most selective journals in biology. The model generated about 300,000 virtual protein maps covering 24 cancer types and 306 subtypes. It found 1,234 real, verified connections between immune cell behavior, genetic mutations, tumor staging, and patient survival that were previously invisible at this scale. When they tested it against a completely separate database of 10,200 cancer patients, the results matched up almost perfectly (0.88 out of 1.0 agreement). Nature Methods named spatial proteomics (mapping where specific proteins sit inside your tissue) its Method of the Year in 2024, and specifically cited GigaTIME in a March 2026 update as a model that “democratizes” this kind of analysis. The full model is open-source on Hugging Face. Any cancer research lab with archived biopsy slides, and most of them have thousands, can now run virtual immune profiling without buying a single piece of new equipment.

PSA: I just survived the best phishing attempt I've ever seen. A "reporter" at TechCrunch with a 10-year-old account and 9k followers DMed me asking if I'd be interested in giving input to an article that sounded relevant. When I said yes, they sent me to a real cal.com link to book with the name of an actual TC reporter. After booking, I got redirected to another page saying I had to verify myself to complete the booking. The auth request looks somewhat legit, except for a small red note that it's not approved. My spidey sense had been tripped and I realized the domain was sketchy, but if I wasn't on autopilot (or if I was an OpenClaw) I might have easily given them full access to my account. Stay safe out there.

BREAKING: QatarEnergy just declared Force Majeure. Three words that mean: we cannot deliver, and legally, we do not have to. This is no longer a supply disruption. This is a contract collapse. Force Majeure is not a precaution. It is a formal legal declaration that an unforeseeable event beyond QatarEnergy’s control has made fulfillment impossible. Every affected buyer just had their contract voided. The gas they were counting on is gone, and they have no legal recourse to get it back. 82% of Qatar’s LNG goes to Asia. China relies on Qatar for 30% of its LNG imports. India 42 to 52%. South Korea 14 to 19%. Taiwan 25%. Japan is already rationing to spot markets. Asian benchmark prices jumped 39% the day production stopped. Force Majeure just made that permanent until further notice. Indian companies have already cut gas supplies to industry by 10 to 30%. That is not a market adjustment. That is factories running at reduced capacity today, across the world’s most populous continent, because Iran sent drones into Ras Laffan. Here is the number the market still has not fully absorbed. Two weeks to restart a liquefaction train after a full cold shutdown. Then two more weeks to reach full capacity. That is a minimum of four weeks at zero, assuming no further strikes, no security complications, no inspection delays. The war is still running. There is no security guarantee. There is no restart timeline. There is no floor. Every LNG contract in Asia just became a spot market problem. Every spot market problem just became an inflation problem. Every inflation problem just became a central bank problem. This started as a war in the Middle East. It is now inside every factory, every power plant, and every gas bill across Asia. Price that chain. open.substack.com/pub/shanakaans…
