Few people recognise how embedded Chinese businesses are in AI supply chains. But investors do! And they are betting Chinese battery and energy storage system companies will be the main game in town for the frenzied global AI buildout.

The rise of DeepSeek has rekindled interest in China's innovative small businesses — known as 小巨人, or "little giants" — developing technology that can drive future economic growth. Beijing's little-known stock exchange is becoming an IPO hub for these small tech companies. The businesses listed there make everything from data centre cooling equipment and battery materials to the carbon fibre used in aircraft and satellites.

Biotech companies from mainland China are pushing boundaries in fundamental cancer research and investors are taking notice. The Hang Seng Biotech index is up over 60% this year, with companies like 3SBio Inc. and Akeso Biopharma leading gains as they sign licensing agreements with western pharmaceutical groups for new drugs that have the potential to transform how we treat cancer.

“In China every yield is going down except for the dividend yield.” China's big banks have become bond proxies as investors hunt for yield at a time of record-low interest rates. The country's insurance industry is helping drive the trend.

1/ Trade tensions, deflation, falling property prices. By now all familiar challenges for China's economy. Less talked about is the lacklustre performance of A-shares so far this year, which stands in stark contrast to a bull market in Hong Kong.

Bets that currency deals will form part of trade negotiations with the US have helped lift a string of Asian currencies against the dollar, as traders look for signs that countries will offer to scale back intervention to appease President Donald Trump. on.ft.com/4kAt125

Chinese investors are pouring money into Hong Kong at historic levels, driving the city's stock market to outperform mainland equities by the widest margin since 2008. A weak onshore economy and lack of listed AI companies in China are driving the trend. on.ft.com/4kpbFVC

Donald Trump's erratic tariff threats have driven up volatility in G7 and EM currencies to levels last seen during the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse in March 2023. This heightened uncertainty has spurred greater demand for FX hedging among corporates and investors seeking to mitigate risks in a rapidly changing world. Read the full story here: on.ft.com/4cAmcuF
