Records of Judaism in the Himyarite region appear from the 2nd to 3rd centuries ad. Inscriptions mention synagogue constructions approved by Himyarite kings. An ancient Jewish cemetery at Beth Shearim, in Israel, contains inscriptions referring to "people of Himyar," meaning that Jews from Yemen were buried there, which shows established ties by the 3rd to 4th centuries ad. A wave of emigration from Roman Judea to Yemen also occurred after the failed Bar Kokhba revolt (132-135 ad), as Jews sought refuge in this prosperous trading region away from Roman persecution. Genetic studies on Yemenite Jews show shared Levantine-Israelite ancestry via Y-chromosome haplogroups common in other Jewish groups, alongside some local South Arabian admixture, supporting ancient migration mixed with later conversions.
