the problem is in usa you think the "american" part is implied, some people in latam tend to abbreviate this way too when talking to other people in our countries but we are not so self centered to think our main nationality is implied when talking to other countries, you are

I've solved the issue Mexicans and pochos are having: Americans often use nationality words as ancestry labels. Mexicans often use them as national identity labels. In American speech 'I’m Mexican' often means 'I’m of Mexican descent.' Just like 'I’m Irish/Italian/Cuban' Nobody thinks 'this guy is literally a citizen of Ireland and has the same lived experience' I hope this clears up the confusion.
