China mandated 45 kg of magnesium alloy per vehicle by 2030 - up from 5 kg today 🇨🇳 That is a 9x increase in magnesium content per vehicle. This is not a market trend. It is a government directive. China produces 88% of the world's magnesium - 830,000 metric tons in 2023. The government views magnesium as a strategic material: 100% domestically sourced, unlike aluminum where China produces only 60% of its needs domestically. The calculation is simple: use more of what you control entirely. Every Chinese EV manufacturer must now integrate significantly more magnesium structural parts. The demand is creating a massive build-out of thixomolding capacity - with suppliers ordering 30-50 machines at a time.
