Japanese rule nobody explains: Don't reply to 「いらっしゃいませ」when entering a shop. Not rude — expected. It's a one-way signal ("I see you entered"), not a conversation opener. Responding makes staff pause. Japanese kids pick this up around age 5-6. Exception: small shops where you know the owner.
