HALF TIME | 🐟 1-2 End to end game so far!! Weston cut in from the left curled it into the corner. Connor made a great penalty save which was going into the bottom corner! Marske scrambled a goal back from open play tap in at the back post. Lovely ball in from Browny for a fine strike from Bauer which put the Pikes 2 - 1 up. Stan Connor has made some outstanding saves to keep us ahead. 🙌👌 #UpThePikes

𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛 | 🏆 Last nights man of the match in our victory over Sheffield FC, was Ben Leyland. An outstanding workmanlike performance in the middle of midfield alongside the impressive, George Thewlis. Topped of with the first goal of the evening, a great strike from the edge of the box, a finish that any striker would have been proud of. Full deserved. Well done, Ben #UpThePikes 🐟

GARMAN SIGNS | ✍️ You may have noticed the club have had a new keeper between the sticks in recent games. The club are delighted to officially announce the signing of Harry Garman. The twenty four year old joins us from Liversedge, having played previously for Brighouse and Stocksbridge in the league above the NCEL (Northern Premier East League). Harry is a great addition to the Pikes, having played three games for the Pikes so far this season, keeping a clean sheet in the home game against Beverley Town. Our Groundsman, Johnny Smith | 💙 All sports clubs at any level have volunteers whether it be Chairman, treasurer, Secretary or Committee members. They all work tirelessly to keep their clubs running smoothly and of course a great deal of that work that goes on tends to go unnoticed, probably one of most unnoticed roles is that of the Groundsman. At Pickering we take a great deal of pride in the many complimentary comments we get from visiting sides and spectators alike, as to the quality and appearance of the pitch, but of course this does not happen by accident, it takes a great deal lot of care and hard work to achieve the necessary results. To help us understand some of the work and effort that goes into the job I caught up with John (Smithy) for a quick chat to explain and give us an some of an insight into the work involved and appreciation of the accolades the club receives. When I say a quick chat, I should have realised that’s never an option with Smithy because his enthusiasm for the job is still the same as when he started doing the job many years ago, so 2 hours later…..!!! 😆 John says this year has been especially challenging, probably the most difficult in the time he has been doing the job. With the lack of rainfall for most of the year since March the average rainfall has been well down but of course this has also been exaggerated by the long periods of hot weather we have had this year. The work to maintain the pitch goes on all year, cutting the grass is a weekly affair, but often during the warmer months can be two to three times weekly. Besides this the pitch is spiked once or twice a month, slitting also takes place on a regular basis. John also quadraplays the pitch often which helps with maintaining the establishment and the quality of the grass. The close season can be one of the most important times when re-seeding, verti draining and the spreading of sand takes place. After re-seeding, manually filling the holes with a sand/soil/seed mix is also carried out. Fertilizer is applied two or three times a year and spraying to control the weeds. Irrigation is another job that is required especially this year. This is only a brief description of what tasks are involved and we must not forget besides the football side of things, John has the responsibility for cricket side of things as well. This time of the year always brings extra pressure as well with Football and Cricket being played side by side. This season is especially hectic with the number of mid-week and Friday matches being played and with Cricket being played on the Saturday, you begin to understand the dedication and amount of time and effort that goes into producing the kind of playing surface the team have become accustomed to. The process is a 12 month of the year task in all weathers, and John’s efforts are very much appreciated. ☺️ Thanks also to Mike who is a big part of helping at the ground. When there is a fantastic team of volunteers on board, who really put their heart and dedication in to what they do, you end up with amazing results! Thank you! 👌🏻 #UpThePikes 🐟
