It's not just black people that are on welfare. There are a ton of white people on welfare in the iron belt area because they were put out of jobs when the mining industries were shut down. Certain industries are seasonal, including people who work for the IRS, who spend half the year collecting welfare or unemployment, depending on how long that has been their job. If you work for a resort town, that's often seasonal too. Those benefits are meant for these types of situations, not to be a way of life.

@LividsRevenge @SafetyNotorious Because of illiteracy? The barrier of entry is low these days, 18% to 21% of U.S. adults are functionally illiterate, why even bother to pay any taxes at this rate. Just file on self income below the standard deduction.

Definitely something that needs to change about our system. Of course, you could come across some other burdens... might have some legal problems if you can't show how you were supporting yourself up until the time of retirement - could get tricky if you're not filing US tax returns. People who collect without a work history typically are on caseload prior with documented proof of disability. I know someone who was approved as disabled because of illiteracy... seems not to be the nicest life living in the 'hood of that $900 per month.
