There was a guy named Ibrahim who prided himself on being “emotionally intelligent.” He used to say things like, “I understand women. I know how they think.” And to be fair, he did at least in the environments he kept finding himself in. It started casually. A coworker. Friendly conversations. Lunch breaks that became longer than they should. She mentioned she had a boyfriend but always with a complaint attached. “He doesn’t understand me.” “We’re not really happy.” Ibrahim didn’t see himself as the bad guy. In his head, he was just filling a gap. And when things crossed the line, it didn’t feel like destruction, it felt like connection. Like he had access to a version of her nobody else did. That was the illusion. Because what he was really learning without realizing it was a very specific version of reality: That affection can be divided. That words don’t always match actions. That intimacy can exist without accountability. He stayed in that dynamic longer than he should have. Long enough for it to normalize. Then one day, it ended the same way it began quietly, conveniently. No closure. No clean explanation. Just distance. Months later, Ibrahim met someone else. This one was different. No drama. No hidden phone calls. No confusion. Just clarity. She liked him openly. Respected him. Showed consistency. And that’s where the real damage revealed itself. Because instead of feeling secure, Ibrahim felt… uneasy. There were no cracks to exploit, no chaos to decode. No emotional rollercoaster to “win.” So his mind started creating one. Why is she so calm? Is this real? What is she hiding? He found himself checking things that didn’t need checking. Questioning things that were straightforward. Doubting someone who had given him no reason to be doubted. Not because she did anything wrong but because he had spent too much time in a space where wrong things felt normal. One night, she asked him a simple question: “Why does it feel like you’re always waiting for me to mess up?” He didn’t have an answer. Because the truth was uncomfortable: He wasn’t seeing her. He was seeing every situation he had participated in before. That’s the part people don’t talk about. Being the side guy doesn’t just “hurt your view of women.” It conditions you to associate intimacy with inconsistency. So when something healthy shows up, it feels unfamiliar almost suspicious. And many men don’t lose good women because those women are bad… they lose them because they no longer recognize what good looks like. Not every man walks away damaged. But if you stay too long in situations where loyalty is optional, you don’t just risk your reputation, you risk your ability to believe in something real when it finally shows up.

The real victim here is the guy she's cheating with. He'll never trust a woman ever in his life. We often don't talk about the side effects of being the side dude. Though it's fun for the most part but it comes with an everlasting dent in a man's orientation about women. He'll hardly ever see the good side about a woman again and will most likely lose a good woman due to his insecurities from his past experiences with women.
