Midnight Network is a fourth-generation blockchain platform focused on "rational privacy," which allows users and organizations to verify information without exposing sensitive personal or commercial data.
It restores the original promise of Web3 by eliminating the trade-off between utility and privacy. Built by the Midnight Foundation -an independent organization advancing development, adoption, and community support- and Shielded (a spinout from Input Output, specializing in privacy-enhancing decentralized tech), Midnight leverages zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, particularly recursive zk-SNARKs, to enable selective disclosure.

KEY TECHNICAL FEATURES
Midnight's design blends public verifiability with confidential data handling:
Dual Ledger Architecture: A public (unshielded) ledger for transparency and a private (shielded) ledger for sensitive data. This allows dApps to operate on a spectrum from fully public to fully private.
Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK-SNARKs): Uses recursive zk-SNARKs for proofs without data exposure. Switched to BLS12-381 curve in April 2025 for better performance, efficiency, and security (faster transactions, lower costs).
Kachina Protocol: A foundational framework for private smart contracts, enabling non-interactive ZK proofs for valid state transitions without revealing private data.
ZSwap: A zk-SNARK-based non-interactive multi-asset swap protocol for secure, atomic token exchanges while preserving confidentiality.
Compact Programming Language: A TypeScript-based domain-specific language (DSL) for smart contracts. It democratizes ZK app development by reducing cryptographic complexity, allowing millions of developers to build privacy logic easily.
Features include sovereign control over data visibility, predictable costs (token price decoupled from execution), and compliance without compromise.
Key Components: Top-level contract structure, circuits/witnesses for proofs, on-chain runtime.
Toolchain: compact CLI for compiling, installing, and updating. Supports VSCode extension for editing.
Token System: NIGHT ( $NIGHT ): Unshielded native and governance token. Public and transparent, used for governance, staking, and generating DUST. DUST: Network resource for transaction fees, derived from NIGHT.
