Quite entertaining watching the strings on the SpaceX IPO. SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic are all eyeing public markets in the same window. Bankers are probably already quietly warning there isn't enough capital to absorb three massive listings at the same time. First mover captures the demand. The ones behind fight over what's left. Likely why SpaceX is rushing June despite the Mars transport system being nowhere near ready and XAI burning a 1b dollars a month. The mechanics of the listing alone are worth paying attention to. Only 5-10% of shares will float. They're lobbying exchanges to bypass the standard one-year index inclusion requirement and fast-track into the S&P 500 after just 15 trading days. If that happens, every passive fund tracking the index gets forced into the stock at whatever price the supply squeeze has already manufactured. That's $24 trillion in passive capital with no choice in the matter. Unfortunately retail like cattle will line up for this willingly. SpaceX is one of the most recognisable brands on the planet. Rockets. Mars. Musk. Most people buying on day one won't be looking at the 94x revenue multiple or questioning why a rocket company just merged with a money-losing chatbot at a $250 billion valuation. They'll be looking at the ticker and thinking they're buying the "future". We've pretty much seen this exact movie. Tesla was added to the S&P 500 in December 2020 after a massive runup. From the day of inclusion it has underperformed the broader index by over 20%. Insiders who'd been holding for years sold into the euphoria. Retail buyers and pension funds forced in at the top held the bag.
