@catalinmpit Unpopular opinion: Developers should make better use of meeting time. I've often seen tickets go through refinement and estimation, yet at the start of the Sprint, the developer doesn't know what to do.

Too many meetings! I have no issues with daily stand-ups. They’re good for updates, unblocking work and staying in sync. But there’re so many pointless and draining meetings. Most of them are a waste of valuable resources that could be spent elsewhere. How can this be prevented or improved?

@EyeforRetail_ I'm from italy and I can confirm that's very cool but these very small shops have low volumes and need to keep the price very high sometimes. You can't definitely shop everyday in there.

@varcoza @NoName04282673 @varonachroma @Jason I'm 25 and I've never seen an ice machine, we are just not used as you in the US. We don't drink very much and usually in small portions. We don't need to keep refrigerated huge glasses of soda I guess.

@NoName04282673 @varonachroma @Jason If you read carefully I'm just saying that if you don't find something (in this case: ice in drinks) it can mean there's a low or no demand for it (I'm not saying that ice is not demanded per se). My great grandfather's family had an ice company before WW1 for example.

@Jason I used to stay at a friends house in Florence, and they used to make their own ice by filling water bottles with water and freezing them. I realized how much of a lack of ice machines there was in Italy and even thought about starting a business around it.

@0xLGala I'm happy with the 'tech' aspect of the role - driving a project and making design decisions etc - but I don't enjoy direct line management (and I don't think it's where my skills lie). I personally think people management and hands-on tech should be kept to separate roles!

In my 15 years in dev, I've done two stints as tech lead with up to 6 direct reports and a year as a technical PM. Management wasn't for me, but I appreciated the different perspective and was glad of the path back to coding.

There are few more costly mistakes than losing a great engineer to someone who becomes a poor manager. So it's surprising that relatively few places 1. Invest in training for newly transitioned engineering managers 2. Offer a "safe path" back to IC for newly transitioned EMs

@TylerAYoung It's weird that companies hire people because of exp with a particular language (a tool) and not for their skills. Btw I'd not be surprised if this is a company where the first interviews are led from non tech people and they drop you just because you don't have elixir exp.

Someone said their company is considering moving away from Elixir because they're worried they can't hire enough devs. (They currently employ, um, 3.) This is a bad reason to move! Here's a brief guide to hiring in niche languages, using Elixir as an example: #MyElixirStatus

@bitandbang I noticed recently that airfare has doubled in price. I’m paying at least twice as much prior to COVID. I think this is due to governments wanting to curb air travel. In the Netherlands, Schiphol airport is canceling thousands of flights this summer

@kvlly I mean: going from 90 to 5 minutes it's probably still a very impressive thing. I wonder if it would have been the same for other candidates.
