VALLETTE - At the invitation of the Republic of Malta, Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, conducted an official visit to Valletta to strengthen bilateral ties. Upon arrival, he was received by Lieutenant General Clinton O’Neill, Chief of the Maltese Defence Force, signaling the high-level nature of the diplomatic mission.
The visit featured strategic discussions with key Maltese officials, including Foreign Minister Ian Borg, to expand cooperation in the economic, trade, and educational sectors. Security remained a top priority, as Haftar and Interior Minister Byron Camilleri focused on joint mechanisms to combat illegal immigration and smuggling, while also planning specialized training programs to enhance the Libyan Coast Guard’s maritime capabilities.
Concluding the visit, former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat commended the General Command’s role in stabilizing the region, emphasizing that these security efforts have a direct positive impact on the Mediterranean. Ultimately, this mission underscores the General Command’s dedication to fostering international partnerships that serve Libya's national interests and regional stability.
