Quick comparison of a Web3 protocol with a well-known one: HTTP.
Nobody's making money off the HTTP protocol itself, but virtually no tech business would be able to make money without it.
So how do we do this in web3?

It’s really hard for web3 protocols to capture any value. They are just code, it’s easy to rewrite and fork and work around. If everything is “free” you end up with marketplaces dominating all the value capture. This is what happened with AWS and open source software. Amazon will just take your open source code and turn it into a free service on top of their compute. If @metaplex discovers a viable business model for a protocol to capture value, everyone will copy it. It’s a win for web3. I am pissed about the license. It’s not open source, it’s source available. If there is one thing that will galvanize people to rewrite the standard, it’s a non open source license.
