📌 ENEDEP Dockworkers' Union: The dockworkers of Piraeus will not become a link in the chain of transporting war material.
We denounce the new attempt to use the Port of Piraeus for the transfer of military material to Israel.
On March 17, the vessel MSC VEGA is expected to dock at the port of Piraeus carrying containers with military steel that will be transshipped onto the vessel MSC ADRIANNA, with final destination the ELBIT military industry in Israel.
On March 26, the vessel MSC DANIT is also expected to dock, carrying containers with military steel with the same destination. This is the same vessel that attempted a similar transfer of war material two years ago, an attempt that was prevented thanks to the determined stance of the dockworkers at the Port of Piraeus.
Our position is a continuation of the strike of February 6th, when dockworkers of Piraeus together with workers from more than 20 ports in 7 countries across Europe and the Mediterranean raised a common front against the transport of war material and the transformation of ports into links in the war supply chain.
We state clearly:
Dockworkers will not load war material.
We will not become accomplices in the slaughter of peoples.
The greek government bears enormous responsibility. With its strategic choice of deeper involvement of the country in the imperialist plans of the USA – NATO – EU, it is turning ports, infrastructure, and the country as a whole into hubs for the transport of military material and war operations.
At the same time that the people are paying the price of inflation, energy poverty, and the consequences of wars, the big business interests of shipping and transport are making enormous profits from the surge in freight rates, reaching the point of launching a new ship every day.
They want the workers of the port to load the ships of war.
They want us to become silent spectators and accomplices to the crimes committed against peoples. Just as the seafarers' unions PEMEN and Stefenson did not accept it when seafarers were trapped while the so-called “patriotic” Greek shipowners were sending death notices to Greek and foreign seafarers from the comfort of their living rooms, we will not accept it either.
We will not allow the transformation of ports into links of the war machine, exposing workers and the people of the region to serious dangers, turning Piraeus and the entire country into potential targets of retaliation.
The dockworkers of Piraeus have proven that when workers organize and struggle they can block such plans.
We call on the workers of the port, the trade unions, and the people of Piraeus and Attica to strengthen the struggle for:
• No involvement of the country in imperialist war
• Ports and infrastructure not to be used for the transport of war material
• Disengagement from war plans and alliances that spill the blood of peoples
• The immediate return of the frigates guarding the US-NATO bases
The real power lies in the organization of the working class, in confronting the interests that profit from wars, and in the struggle for a society where wealth and infrastructure serve the needs of workers and not the profits and war plans of the few.
The dockworkers of Piraeus will once again stand at the forefront, and the Port of Piraeus will not become a base of war.
Only the peoples can save the peoples.
