The cargo truck was on its way to the Imnaha River to release 102,000 Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) into the river when it slid off the road along a tributary of the Grande Ronde River in northeastern Oregon, USA. Of the 102,000 salmon on the vehicle, up to 77,000 fell into the adjacent creek and escaped death, while 25,529 died on the spot.
