The South Philly neighborhood of my childhood - during segregation- had black-owned businesses on every corner, church baseball teams, and elderly folks could walk safely without fear. "We were broke, but we were not poor." Poverty doesn't have to be depravity. Watch our new series Resilience and Renewal| Episode 1: "The Turning Point" - youtu.be/o3Kgi32Bzwo?si…

🚑Ever call an ambulance? Did paramedics come to your rescue? Thank Freedom House.🚨 Freedom House Ambulance Service: a groundbreaking #emergency medical program founded in Pittsburgh in the late '60s. #FreedomHouse paramedics became some of the first highly trained emergency responders in the country, and they delivered care directly in neighborhoods that had long been underserved. The program recruited local Black men who had been denied stable job opportunities and provided them with rigorous, cutting‑edge medical training. The program’s success helped shape modern Emergency Medical Services (EMS) nationwide. Check out our new, free K-12 Black History and Excellence lesson: woodsoncenter.org/project/freedo… Video clip: from "The Pitt", S1, E8

That was not only Jackson’s tragedy. It reflected a larger national decline. Communities suffer when truth is silenced to protect alliances. The next phase of progress will not come through grievance, racial theater, or party loyalty. It will come through truth, discipline, accountability, and courage.

"Before Jesse Jackson became absorbed in partisan politics, he did speak for the least of these...His later rhetoric stood in plain tension with the moral force of his earlier views." Read @BobWoodson's latest op-ed in @WSJ: wsj.com/opinion/jesse-…

Imagine if a quarter of a billion dollars was invested in grassroots leaders—proven healing agents in their neighborhoods— & not pocketed by the elites that are far removed from our communities in need. How would you invest in your community?

"The future of the nation cannot be decided first in Washington, universities, or media studios. It will be decided in neighborhoods, churches, schools, and families, by whether we teach our children that they belong to something and therefore owe something to one another." washingtonexaminer.com/in_focus/44768…

"America’s greatest suffering is not political division. Americans are not morally dead — we are morally depleted. This is a moral exhaustion that sets in when people are exposed to constant moral conflict without clear resolution, no agency, and no shared victory."

Members of our staff spent the weekend in Delaware for the 2026 @MidStatesCSS! It was wonderful to connect with educators from NY, PA, NJ, MD, & DE, and hear how well-received our free K-12 black history & excellence curriculum is in the classroom. Our founder @BobWoodson was also honored as the keynote speaker for the conference, which was such a treat. Thank you to Jennifer @msjingold and the rest of the Middle States team for making us newcomers feel so welcomed!

KNOW THEIR STORIES ⭐️ MEET OUR PIONEERING HEROES In our final week of #BlackHistoryMonth, we're introducing you to those who were pioneers in their fields: From Bass Reeves, "wild west" peace officer and US Marshal, to Katherine Johnson, one of the "Hidden Figures" in the NASA space program, to the little-known town of Covert, Michigan, that organically integrated during the height of segregation. Check out their lessons and others here: woodsoncenter.org/how-we-help/cu…

I know the @WoodsonCenter has something special here because my kids didn’t say a single word during this entire video about Mary Caldwell Dawson. They loved it so much that we watched three more. Kudos to @BobWoodson and @IanVRowe for making these. Highly recommend.
