The Soviet Union flag is lowered and the Russian flag is raised over the Kremlin. December 25, 1991.... On the evening of December 25, 1991, a quiet but historic ceremony unfolded above the Kremlin. The red hammer-and-sickle banner of the Soviet Union was lowered for the final time, and the white-blue-red tricolor of Russia was raised in its place. Earlier that day, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the USSR, declaring the office extinct. With that act, a superpower that had existed since 1922 formally dissolved. The Soviet Union fragmented into 15 independent republics, reshaping the geopolitical map overnight. The Cold War, which had defined global politics for nearly half a century, effectively ended in that moment. Nuclear arsenals, military alliances, and economic systems were suddenly in flux. The Russian Federation assumed the USSR’s permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and inherited the bulk of its nuclear arsenal. At its height, the Soviet Union spanned 11 time zones and covered roughly one-sixth of the Earth’s land surface, making its dissolution one of the largest and fastest geopolitical collapses in modern history. © History Pictures #archaeohistories
