Guess who vigorously opposed Confederate memorials? Robert E. Lee, who said they would "keep open the sores of war" and cause national division. Suffice it to say he was correct.

Memorializing the Confederacy wasn't supposed to be conciliatory. It was mostly done in the 1900s—many decades after the war had ended—to revive the Lost Cause narrative during a time of enormous opposition to civil rights. The Civil War was already long over by this point.

This is historically illiterate. The Lee statue in Charlottesville was unveiled in 1924 with a 2-hour parade (and public cross burning) by the KKK. When the UNC Confederate monument was unveiled in 1913, the MC bragged about "horse-whipp[ing] a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds." The Jefferson Davis statue in Nola was unveiled in 1911 at a whites only ceremony where they sang "Dixie." Does that sound like "NATIONAL RECONCILIATION"?

Here’s the thing: the reason why the US government started naming things after confederates AFTER the Civil War was as a gesture of NATIONAL RECONCILIATION. These names don’t just honor confederates, they honor the concept of American unity and nationhood. Which is the true reason the left hates them.

Four years ago, in the middle of a pandemic, we needed a leader with the character to put politics aside and do what was right. That’s what @JoeBiden did.   At a time when our economy was reeling, he drove what would become the world’s strongest recovery – with 17 million new jobs, historic wage gains, and lower health care costs. He passed landmark legislation to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure and address the threat of climate change.    I’m grateful to Joe for his leadership, his friendship, and his lifetime of service to this country we love.

Jon Stewart nails it: Republicans want Californians to suffer so they can play partisan politics—but only when blue states are hurting. California pays more in federal taxes than the bottom 30 states combined, most of them red,but they’ll never admit that. SAY IT PLAIN: They want to punish California because they think it’s the leader of woke!

Senator Thune said yesterday that he is open to working on amendments to the Laken Riley Act. We urge Senators to focus on amending the provisions of this bill which threaten to upend our constitutional system and lock up innocent immigrants for offenses they didn't commit. 5/5

In the United States, even noncitizens are innocent until proven guilty, and it's the president who decides whether to sanction countries and cut legal immigration, not single judge at the request of a single state. The Laken Riley Act could change all of that. 4/5

Finally, Senator Britt's office tries to defend the radical provisions of the bill letting state attorneys general sue to take control of immigration enforcement. But they're silent on the biggest poison pill—a provision which could let a single judge cut legal immigration. 3/5

Senator Britt's office says the Laken Riley Act just makes minor changes to current law. That is false. Immigration law has never mandated detention for arrests which didn't lead to criminal charges, or which even resulted in acquittals! That transforms how the law operates. 2/5

NEW—Senator Britt has been sharing a document defending the Laken Riley Act with other senators raising concerns. The problem is, the document makes a number of significant errors. We obtained a copy and marked it up, explaining where her office got the facts and law wrong. 1/5

The race for Speaker in the TX House is over. I was 1 of 10 Democrats who did not vote for either Republican candidate. Both R candidates expressed certainty that a significant voucher bill would pass under their leadership. With fear for our neighborhood schools, I dissent.

For MAGA Twitter who is praising Donald Trump for “closing the southern border in one day by threatening Mexico with tariffs.” Here’s Mexico’s ACTUAL response. Maybe ask the right wing influencers that you consume all your information from why they’re lying to you. 👇👇

Do NOT engage with @BradMossEsq. That is not my law partner. His account was hacked & X will not assist him in taking it back. So if you purchased a laptop from #FakeBrad, you have lost that money. Report it to law enforcement. Unfollow the account.

“Secret donations” are bribes. The hundreds of millions he received from Elon Musk and other billionaires are also bribes. There’s a reason Donald Trump isn’t signing ethics pledges. yahoo.com/news/trump-ref…

This is what we call a “red flag.” The refusal to sign standard ethics and transparency agreements is a clear indication of what to expect from the #Trump administration. They aren’t draining the swamp. They’re flooding it. Just like last time. politico.com/news/2024/11/2…
