The Trump administration’s argument runs as follows: looks, by allowing Iran to export its oil, we cap prices just over $100 a barrel rather than letting them surging to, say $150 a barrel. But here’s the issue: even assuming the above math was true (it isn’t), it ignores the fact that Iran has agency over its **own** oil exports. If Tehran thought that it’s more convenient to push oil prices higher rather than make extra money by exporting extra barrels, it would be very easy for it to achieve that outcome: Iran only needs to reduce its oil exports — something it controls.
