Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda and Djibouti have signed a MOU to kick off the Djibouti–Ethiopia–South Sudan–Uganda (DESSU) Corridor. This corridor will connect the three landlocked countries to the Port of Djibouti and it's expected to be a one-stop border posts (OSBPs) Ethiopia and Djibouti have already invested in their part of $214.5m that was approved by AfDB in December 2025 in phase II of this project. Modernists took Western epistemology, legal theory, Western economic models, governance structures & transliterate it into Arabic. Then they called it an Islamic renaissance. Look at the results. Every postcolonial Muslim government. Egypt under Nasser. Tunisia under Bourguiba. Pakistan under Ayub Khan. Western constitutional frameworks, bureaucratic administration, development economics with Islamic vocabulary sprinkled on top to keep the population calm. These were never Islamic civilizational projects. They were colonial structures with new flags. And the GCC today is the clearest living example. The entire financial architecture is Western dollar-pegged currencies, banking systems, sovereign wealth funds parked on Wall Street. The security architecture is Western ,US bases, foreign defense guarantees, the institutional design is Western, technocratic ministries modeled on European governance systems. But they’ll tell you with a straight face that this represents Islamic civilization. It doesn’t. It’s a franchise. And franchises don’t survive when the parent company turns hostile. The Traditionalists saw all of this and said: these people sold out. Return to the Quran and Sunnah. Reject modernity. The instinct wasn’t entirely wrong. The execution was catastrophic. Because here is what they fundamentally missed: the classical scholars were great precisely because they engaged their reality creatively. Ibn Khaldun wasn’t just memorising he built the world’s first theory of sociology and civilizational collapse from within an Islamic framework. The architects of usul al-fiqh constructed a sophisticated legal philosophy capable of generating original answers to new problems. They took the Islamic epistemological foundation and used it as a tool to think with, not a wall to hide behind. Imitating the classical scholars means doing what they did, reasoning hard, engaging reality, generating original answers from within the tradition. Instead, Traditionalism produced scholars who are technically brilliant inside the classical framework and completely paralyzed outside it. And from its more radical edge came movements that could destroy but could not build. They had answers for every question a medieval jurist would ask. They had nothing for how to run a state, manage an economy, or govern a population under modern geopolitical pressure. Afghanistan was the proof. Every Islamic governance experiment of the modern era collapsed for the same reason. Both responses shared the same root failure: neither rebuilt the Islamic methodology of knowledge the actual intellectual infrastructure that made the civilization great in the first place. The Modernists abandoned it. The Traditionalists fossilized it. Neither produced a living, breathing intellectual tradition capable of generating original answers to new questions
