CARRY ME OR CARRY ON
A Study In Contrast Between Risa Hontiveros and Pia Cayetano
Public service is not about asking the public to worry about you. It is about reassuring the public that you are equal to the moment.
After the Senate shooting incident, Senator Pia Cayetano publicly wondered why no one was checking on her welfare. Together with her brother, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano who also expressed the same sentiment in a press briefing days earlier, the message that came across was: “Check on me and carry me.”
Yet history gives us a different standard. President Corazon Aquino endured nine coup attempts, including the bloody 1989 coup that nearly toppled her government. Her son, Benigno Aquino III, was struck by a bullet that remained lodged in his neck for the rest of his life. Yet Cory Aquino never publicly asked why no one was checking on her welfare. She never demanded sympathy. She never made herself the story. She kept her composure, fulfilled her duty, and focused on leading the nation through crisis, the same quiet stoicism exemplified by the late Queen Elizabeth II throughout her reign of service.
And when Senator Risa Hontiveros found herself on the receiving end of Senator Pia Cayetano’s complaints, she responded neither with self-pity nor anger but with dignity, restraint, and firmness. Her message was simple: Keep Calm And Carry On.
That is the contrast before us. One approach says, “Check on me and carry me.” The other says, “Keep calm and carry on.”
In public service, the measure of leadership is not how often we ask others to check on us. It is whether, in moments of crisis, we can steady ourselves, steady the institution, and help the nation carry on.
Last Wednesday, through a privilege speech that sought common ground among her fellow senators, appealed to the best in the Filipino character, and through the calm and dignity she displayed in response to Senator Pia’s rant, Risa Hontiveros proved herself to be one such leader.

Dear President Bongbong Marcos,
Dear DENR Secretary Atty. Mitch Cuna,
Dear Mayor Isko Moreno,
Please please please, I’m begging you to stop the cutting of trees along Roxas Blvd. and Quirino Avenue.
200+ trees have been cut. 400+ trees can still be saved.
Kung kelangan talaga, gastusan ang earth balling or transfer of the trees.
Basta NO CUTTING.
May fun runs at Carless Sunday dyan sa Roxas Boulevard nuon. Tapos aalisin nyo mga puno?
Maawa kayo, please. 🙏

🌳 MANILA CAN’T BREATHE ON SEEDLINGS ALONE 🔥
600 mature trees lost today cannot be replaced overnight by promises for tomorrow.
“Nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live.”
— Laudato Si’, §139
Living Laudato Si’ Philippines expresses deep concern over the continued cutting of mature trees in Metro Manila in the name of infrastructure expansion and urban development. In a city already suffering from extreme heat, worsening floods, air pollution, traffic congestion, and shrinking public green spaces, the removal of hundreds of full-grown trees represents more than ecological loss. It is a climate justice, public health, and human dignity issue.
The narrative that tens of thousands of seedlings can simply compensate for the destruction of mature urban trees dangerously misunderstands ecological integrity. Seedlings are future possibilities. Mature trees are present protection. Established trees already provide critical ecosystem services: cooling urban temperatures, absorbing floodwaters, filtering pollutants, storing carbon, reducing stress, supporting biodiversity, and creating more humane and livable public spaces. These functions cannot be immediately restored through compensatory planting programs that may take decades before reaching ecological maturity.
As climate impacts intensify, urban trees must be recognized not as obstacles to development, but as essential living infrastructure for climate adaptation and resilience. A truly sustainable city cannot be measured solely by road widening, elevated expressways, or faster vehicle mobility while simultaneously making urban life hotter, harsher, and less walkable for ordinary citizens.
Living Laudato Si’ Philippines likewise reiterates the urgent need to separate the DENR’s regulatory and environmental protection functions. Ecological protection should never compete with project approval within the same institutional framework. The future of Manila will not only be defined by what is built, but by what society chooses to protect. 🌿🏙️

@ArrowInMotion Ganyan sana. Kung may concern sa environment at sa overall effect, kasama dapat sa plan to save the trees. Kaso walang kwenta ang DENR, so for SMC, why bother?

Filipino

@1moreangie Mataas naman ang PCAB license nila. It should be required if bidding for that kind of project.
Nagtipid at tinamad siguro ang San Miguel Corporation. 🤬

THEY PAVED PARADISE AND PUT UP A SKYWAY
I condemn the DENR for allowing the tree-cutting and earth-balling of HUNDREDS OF TREES along Quirino Avenue in Manila City.
All of these trees cut.
Just to pave the way for the construction of the “Southern Access Link Expressway” (SALEX) by San Miguel Corporation.
The SALEX spans a measly 4 kilometers but four elevated lanes.
A total of 617 trees will be affected.
617 trees — all of it for just 4 kilometers of an expressway which will never reduce traffic because all expressways have been proven to actually induce demand for automobiles according to empirical research and scientific studies.
Hundreds of trees have ALREADY been cut but hundreds more will be cut in the next few days.
I call on President Bongbong Marcos, the DENR, SMC, and the City of Manila to stop this madness.
SAVE THE TREES!
