Forgiveness that came too late
Victor did not leave because of what he saw
He left because of what it turned him into after
For six years
Victor and Bukola were that couple
The type people secretly envied
They moved like best friends
Finished each other’s sentences
Argued softly
Laughed loudly
Even their neighbors used to joke that they were still in the honeymoon phase
Victor worshipped that woman without calling it worship
And Bukola?
She wore his love carelessly because she became too used to it
That was the problem
Nothing destroys precious things faster than becoming familiar with their value
The affair was never supposed to happen
At least that’s what she told herself afterward
It started with a random message from her ex
Then occasional calls
Then emotional conversations she hid behind:
“It’s nothing serious”
Until one evening
“It’s nothing serious”
became something she could no longer defend
Victor came home earlier than expected from a cancelled business trip
Funny how life changes permanently on very normal days
He remembered buying her favorite bread on the way home
He remembered smiling while driving
He remembered thinking:
“She’ll be happy to see me early”
That memory tortured him the most
Because when he opened the bedroom door
he found his wife with another man
Not rumor
Not suspicion
Reality
Bukola screamed his name immediately
Victor just stood there
Still holding the bread
That image never left him
Not the cheating
The contrast
Love in his hands
Betrayal in front of him
The ex boyfriend started explaining
Bukola started crying
But Victor didn’t hear any of it
Some pain is so loud
everything else becomes mute
He drove out in silence
Packed his things later that night
Removed their wedding picture from the wall
Looked at it for a few seconds
Then dropped it face down
And disappeared
No confrontation
No revenge
No social media drama
Just absence
For years
Bukola searched for him
Not because she wanted the marriage back
She knew she destroyed that
She just wanted to apologize before life permanently separated them
But Victor had already become someone else
The betrayal changed the architecture of his mind
He stopped trusting softness
Stopped believing consistency meant loyalty
Women liked him
But nobody could stay emotionally close
Every time love approached him
his memory pulled out evidence
And slowly
Victor became a difficult man to love
Not toxic
Just emotionally unreachable
Meanwhile Bukola remarried years later
Had another child
Smiled publicly
But privately?
She carried a guilt that never sat down
Because regret ages people internally
Then one weekend
She travelled for a church conference in Enugu
During altar call
The pastor said:
Some of you are not suffering because God abandoned you
You are suffering because apology delayed healing
Those words hit her chest violently
She looked up through tears
And three rows ahead of her..
Victor was sitting there
Older now
Less life in his face
But unmistakably Victor
Her body started shaking
Not because she feared him
Because she realized life had granted her one final window
After service she followed him outside
Rain had started falling lightly
Bukola called his softly from behind
Victor.. Victor,
He turned slowly
And for a moment
neither of them spoke
Years of silence standing face to face
Then she broke
Not graceful crying
Ugly crying
The kind built from years of self hatred
“I destroyed you”
Victor looked away immediately
TO BE CONTINUED.....
