Here's a fun thought mental walkthrough to understand the opportunity @hytopia has relative to all these other "web3 games and studios".
I hope this also serves as a wakeup call to all these other games and studios out there right now that are probably going to flop unless they come to similar realizations..
I also hope this is a wakeup call to all the VCs that backed these studios in the hype cycle but didn't have the foresight to recognize how things will play out from here.
To start, nearly every single game/studio right now that's building with some web3 element is either trying to do something novel with the crypto addition to make a "fun" game experience.. or otherwise just make a "fun" or branded game in general with some crypto addition.
First and foremost. With this approach. These games are ultimately going to have to compete in a pool of many fun games in general (non-web3) to survive long term whether they realize it or not. That is a massively competitive space to build in, let alone adding the crypto element user-experience (UX) which 99% I've seen have gotten wrong in their implementation from a potential mass-adoption standpoint. They may as well have already cut their legs off before they've tried to walk.
These games with web3 elements may have access to a less competitive early adopter pool of crypto-familiar gamers looking for these types of games, but even at scale this is probably less than 10,000 daily active users in the best case. Comparatively to what I've seen with mainstream games & mobile app DAU (daily active user) counts at scale, this is laughably tiny.
"But wait Ark, what about Axie?" - Yes Axie had a peak daily active user count above 2,000,000 players (afaik) - but where's Axie today? Last I checked.. their DAU is < 50,000 players. Their MAU abysmally lower than its peak as well.
Multiplayer games live and die by the sword that is their content, gameplay, and social experience. This compounds the difficulty for games being built that also implement crypto. Players eventually get bored of even the best gameplay experience. Add a value accrual or extraction element like most crypto games have to date, and that falloff curve is even faster when value starts to dwindle or spiral down.
The two most notable and relevant games that have continued to survive the test of time and grow are Minecraft and Roblox. They've created a magical combination of replayability or continuously new content and player social dynamics. Both of these are critical and neither can live long without the other in a multiplayer context.
So with that context, let's focus on @hytopia.
1. Where most games are either having to compete in the highly competitive "fun" games pool, and/or the tiny "crypto games" pool to attract players, we're fortunate to be able to target a huge alternative which is solving critical player and creator issues that have existed within Minecraft.
We're affectively saying "Hey this game has a huge market (170m+ players) and has 10+ years of issues, technical debt, and bottlenecks that still continue to significantly frustrate players and creators" Let's build a better game/platform inspired by the likeness of Minecraft - just like Minecraft was inspired by Infiniminer - and solve all of this once and for all.
Doing this and capturing even 1% of their playerbase is still 1.7m players. Albeit, we think we'll capture significantly more - this just points at the scale of the opportunity with virtually no competition compared to trying to compete with everyone else who are only attracting players by making a "fun" game with overly visible crypto elements.
2. We're only using blockchain/crypto in the most functional context, and nothing more. Pushing crypto/blockchain/ownership as a value prop is still something that mainstream gamers today literally do not care about, and in most cases are turned off by - and while this may change, it's the reality of the state of the environment we're in for the forseeable future.
Our HYTOPIA Chain was built to handle all cross-platform content purchases of cosmetics, specific game content, player to player trading of that content, and in-game currency balance tracking.
We could of used a centralized database and our own developed API here as an alternative, but our own, fast, no-cost-to-us blockchain fundamentally gives us significant benefits over the former.
Primarily, all meaningful in-game content & activity amongst players and creators, as well as our in-game currency are all on chain - verifiable and analyzable by any third party, open for 3rd party devs to build 3rd party applications on top of for tracking the state and behavior of the platform, and more - this is absolutely critical for an open platform where the builders and stakeholders who stand to benefit are dependent on trust of the underlying platform.
Doing this with a centralized DB/API approach would be a significant lift, require us to create our own standards, still retain us as the centralized party that chooses what's visible and what's not, etc.
This isn't an immediate value at all to players or creators, but the long term downstream effects for creators & 3rd party developers will be significant vs alternatives.
3. We're not here to create something 100% new. And let's be honest, all games draw at least a little inspiration from somewhere.
We're here to build a minecraft-inspired player & creator platform that enables what the 100m+ playerbase of Minecraft has been begging for, for years.
This means significantly less guesswork, less a/b testing on critical game mechanics, and more - we know what works, just like the giants before us we take inspiration from the prior giants that proved what worked.
Our mission here is to solve the significant pain and usher in mass adoption through those solutions.
And with that, it should be clear why @hytopia has a significant stand out in opportunity here. We're not trying to be the biggest in web3, we're trying to be THE BIGGEST ugc-based games platform in the world. Rivaling the likes of Roblox, Fortnite UGC, etc.
If you've followed all of this, I hope you understand the scale of what we're trying to do, and how clear the path is.
