@OdedRechavi Why don't we live in a world where most people would have the option do one or the other? Around the globe!
There's enough food for all.

@OrwellNGoode I had an math assistant prof at the university that was regarded as one of the most talented students in the entire campus. Next I saw him happily running his own videogame store

I used to be pretty left wing. Around 2009 was the first time I remember it becoming really clear the left was moving away from me.
I was a student at UVic, and i went to a talk by an Iranian dissident. She was an atheist, and went beyond critiquing the regime and critiqued Islam itself. Being a defender of diversity, I raised my hand and objected, saying something about it being unfair to tarnish the whole religion because of a few extremists. The speaker didn't back down at all, and defended her views and pushed back hard on several Muslims in the crowd he objected.
She didn't change my mind, but I'd appreciated hearing from someone with direct experience of the regime, and the open exchange of ideas on a difficult topic.
The day after the talk I ran into a Muslim woman who had also pushed back on the speaker. She had started a petition to the university demanding an apology and action to prevent speakers saying similar things in the future. I was shocked. I took it for granted that we all supported free speech, and the way to resolve differences was to debate them. I refused to sign and told her why, but she was unapologetic and used language that is now very familiar, about words causing harm to marginalized communities etc etc.
I talked to other people who had been to the talk about this, and most of them had signed the petition and didn't share my objections. They saw no problem censoring opposing opinions if the people being criticized cried hard enough and appeared sufficiently marginalized.
This didn't turn me around overnight, but I become very conscious that a large portion of the left was moving in a direction I wouldn't follow, and I started thinking alot harder about the left wing positions I supported.

In 2002, I climbed Mt. Washington and set a record that changed my life.
7.6 miles. 4,500 feet. 12% grade. Time: 49:24.
I was 23. A former MTBer from East Lyme, CT.
That day I beat Tyler Hamilton’s record, he set right after he finished 4th at the Tour de France.
It launched everything. My first pro contract with Saturn. A call from Lance. And eventually, my first WorldTour contract with Fasso Bortolo.
A lot has happened in the 24 years since.
My career was launched and lost. The identity that came and went with it. Cancer. A partial amputation. Lost fitness. Years of not knowing who I was without the bike.
I’m not sure I can do this. That’s the truth.
Sub-49 on Mt. Washington has never been done.
There are so many reasons I’m not the guy for it.
I’m 48. Dad of 5. Partial amputee. Business owner. Coming back from 11 years away from hard training.
But the audaciousness behind the attempt is the whole point.
And this time I have something I didn’t have in 2002. My own TTM Performance Model.
Now as a coach I’m putting my money where my mouth is.
My TTM doesn’t sugarcoat anything. It lays out the gap between where I am today and where I need to go in stark detail from to power, zone duration, durability, weight, mental strength, technique. Every facet and milestone, each point on the progression is mapped out.
My hope is that it takes me somewhere I stopped believing was possible. For me, that place is becoming a world class climber.
See you August 15, 2026. 🌙
