On June 25, 2026, then Acting Chief Justice Alfredo Benjamin S. Caguioa was conferred by the Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the legal profession, the administration of justice, legal education, governance, and public service. Accepting the award during the MLQU School of Law’s Commencement Exercises in Quezon City, Acting Chief Justice Caguioa said he received the honorary doctorate degree “with the awareness that every recognition is also an invitation—to serve more faithfully, to stand more firmly, and to give more of oneself.” He was cited for his distinguished public service, from serving as Justice Secretary and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel during the administration of the late President Benigno S. Aquino III to his appointment as the 174thAssociate Justice of the #SupremeCourtPH in 2016. He was also acknowledged for his work in the private legal practice as co-founder of Caguioa & Gatmaytan Law Firm and as a leading practitioner in civil and commercial litigation, arbitration, criminal law, and dispute resolution. Acting Chief Justice Caguioa was likewise recognized for his contribution to legal education, helping shape future generations of lawyers and leaders of the nation. Speaking to the MLQU law graduates, Acting Chief Justice Caguioa reminded the future legal practitioners that the country needs lawyers of conviction and principle who will not just accept the status quo, but instead do their part in addressing the cracks in the system. Alongside conviction, he stressed that lawyers must also possess integrity and competence, especially in an age when legal issues are increasingly overshadowed by personalities, political loyalties, and spectacle.
