The story of our journey to justice for Alice, captured so eloquently here by @jamesmelley & @AlisonHoltBBC, who followed what was a marathon trial at the Old Bailey, with all its twists & turns. Originally scheduled for 9 weeks, it lasted over 7 months: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@lizanelly1 So sorry to hear you went through this when you were heavily pregnant & no doubt you would also be feeling very protective & anxious in that environment. Staff should have done everything to safeguard you & ensure you didn’t feel intimidated - & not cause you further distress 😔.

You know this giant of a man called the police on me. Him and his colleague came towards me and i knew they were going to attack me (i was heavily pregnant) I threw a tiny plastic cup at him and he played the victims. He is far from a victim. He is wrong very wrong evil man. 🥹💔
Jane Marie@247Compassion

The ward manager is still remorseless, has played the victim from the outset, scorns very clear evidence by insisting he “doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong”, is appealing his conviction - & yet is still on the payroll & being protected & treated as unassailable by NELFT. 2/4

Alice was clearly by no means the only victim of such heinous behaviour & ill treatment within the confines of an acute NHS mental health ward, supposedly a place of care & safety. In reality this was a death trap where she paid the price with her precious & beautiful life 💔 4/4

This is a scandalous, shameless travesty, devoid of accountability. & the Trust should be ashamed of their gaslighting, blame-shifting conduct through recent trial proceedings. The message this sends is the life & death of a 22 yr old MH patient is inconsequential to them. 3/4

My heart goes out to any women, who like Alice, instead of receiving diligent compassionate care, ever had to endure callous antipathy, heartless contempt, abuse, neglect or were made to feel in any way worthless, intimidated or dehumanised whilst being patients on this ward: 1/4

🥹The met officer Cheryl once told me i reminded her of Alice. I will never forget my time in goodmayes in hepworth ward or forget what Ben did to us all. How he targeted young vulnerable girls in particular. I made so many close mates on that ward. 11 years on 1 i still know.💔

“The evidence at the inquest reflected very poor appreciation of the risks posed to Mrs Adeleyu by her mentally unwell adult son. This poor appreciation of risk was observed at all levels of clinical staff.” Link to full PFD here ⬇️: judiciary.uk/prevention-of-…

“These consisted of insufficient communication regarding the transfer of care and inadequate engagement with Caroline’s family for a broader risk assessment.”’ The PFD by Nadia Persaud sets out a litany of appalling, preventable, lethal failings by both NELFT & ELFT.

Our concerns about this were even documented in Alice’s RiO notes & a staff member confirmed she’d been distressed & crying that day. 3 days later Alice was dead. Yet NELFT’s defence pushed the narrative she was so “well” by then that no risk action on bin bags was necessary.

We felt outrage having to sit on the sidelines & endure such levels of collective ignorance: 2.5 days before Alice died, she sat with tears rolling down her face through our entire visit saying very little because she was in despair about getting the help she needed for her ED.

The disregard & dismissive attitude shown in the trial towards Alice’s eating disorder, & the way this was deflected & played down, highlights wider concerns about attitudes towards people with co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses & how they are treated & failed on general MH wards.

@lizanelly1 Very harrowing, so sorry to hear how you & others were treated 😔. When someone is unwell enough to need to be in hospital, what they deserve is consistent compassionate care & supportive treatment. It takes good team leadership to create a nurturing rather than toxic ward ethos.

The fact my daughter who was suffering mentally & physically with an eating disorder, was restrained after asking if she could have one cracker to eat, then died four nights later, will torment me as long as I live. Barbaric, inhumane incompetence & soul-destroying ill-treatment.
Jane Marie@247Compassion

4 nights before her death, Alice ended up being restrained after asking agency staff for a cracker to eat, the same day she’d been discharged back from a cardiac ward. This was due to plans agreed at ward round & care info not being consistently handed over at shift changes. 1/🧵
