cwestiwn da. Sori, tydi Cymraeg fi ddim digon dda eto I ymatab yn gywir yn yr iaith, ond gobeithio bod hyn yn iawn:
Under the Remuneration Board's Determination, a Member who stands down voluntarily is entitled only to a winding-up payment of two months' salary. A Member who stands and loses gets three months' winding-up, plus a resettlement grant of one month's salary for every completed year of service (capped at six months), plus a further top-up if they ever held an additional office such as a ministerial post or committee chair.
To put real numbers on it: the basic MS salary in the last Senedd was £76,380, £6,365 a month. An MS continuously in post from 2011 to 2026, standing and losing, is entitled to £19,095 in winding-up plus £38,190 in resettlement, over £57,000, before any additional-office top-up. Had they stood down, the entitlement is £12,730. That's a £45,000 gap.
The full Determination is published by the Board here: remunerationboard.wales/determinations/

Does losing pay?
There were a number of sitting MSs running as independent candidates in the 2026 Senedd Election. By all political commentators' accounts it was virtually impossible for them to win election. So why were they standing?
One possibility is that an MS who seeks re-election and loses can gain £10,000s more than an MS who stands down voluntarily. You don't need an economics degree to work out that this can cause perverse incentives.
The UK Parliament recognised this in their equivalent rules and narrowed the pay gap in 2023. I'll be pushing the Remuneration Board of the Senedd to do the same.
Throughout my time in business, I have often found that performance issues don't stem from bad people, but from bad incentive structures. This is exactly how we should view this issue, not by pointing the finger at any individual candidate, but at the system and its architects.
At the risk of overstating it, this mindset may very well be the key to tackling bigger problems facing the Welsh Government.

@SeneddWaste Hi - this short article (5 minute read, with videos) explains.
Welsh tradition follows a patronymic naming system, where the son or daughter takes the father or mother's first name as their surname.
Very common in Wales (and some other countries too!)

@AndrewRTDavies Why don't you take a stance of absenteeism then if you are so against Senedd members?

@speedy3williams @247FoodEater @DevereuxJohn13 I thought I’d help you out to show you what it means for Glasgow. I’m pretty sure they are in a devolved nation. Right no control over immigration.

@247FoodEater @DevereuxJohn13 You swallowed the propaganda hook line & sinker. It gets so boring when people don’t bother to check the source.

English

@247FoodEater I agree our system is not working and it’s a result that governments are scared to try and solve it
English

Oh no, this can't be good PR for Wales' most beloved football club.

@247FoodEater Everyone has the choice and at present my view is Labour has failed and see Plaid as Labour 2.0 that does not mean our fans have to take the same view -

English

@247FoodEater @DanOakesBP What was the indirect cost from time being wasted?

English

@DanOakesBP Yeah, saved lots of money in the end though so deffo worth it after all. Think it cost £30m to set up (from what I can see online) so has paid for itself already 👍🙌
English

@247FoodEater I'm not against 20mph, but more it was implemented in a dumb way. Local Authorities should have been given control over which roads instead of the way they did it.
