Dr Nieland: Poor dietary choices may be a risk factor. Good choices may help minimise the cellular stress that could contribute to disease development.

Dr. Nieland: The pathway to brain diseases seems to be a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental stress.

Dr Nieland: 2N Pharma’s drug candidate significantly extends survival of mice with ALS. The same is true for Parkinson’s and MS. It is far superior to approved drugs in animal studies.

Dr Nieland: The significance of the Inuit mutation was proven in animal models. Mice with the same mutation are protected from MS (EAE), ALS and Parkinson’s.

Dr Nieland: A prevalent genetic mutation in the Inuit people is strongly correlated with much lower incidence rate of ALS and MS.

Dr Nieland: Deficient glucose metabolism in patients can be seen on FDG-PET scans.

Dr Nieland: Unregulated lipid oxidation is common in ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and may be a key driver of neurodegenerative pathologies.
