Want to find out who your friends are? Start a new business venture. When I left the cushy corporate world to dive into the wild world of luxury reselling, I immediately summoned my friends for any and all feedback, words of support, or even just a sounding board venting session. Some were, and continue to be, AMAZING. But some? Some were…quiet. Mutters of “oh, wow…that’s…interesting”, unanswered requests to simply follow me on my newly created social media platforms ( @avivafashion11 ), and the deafening silence when they, inevitably, never once asked me “how’s it going?”. At first, I was deeply hurt. I am a girl’s girl through and through, and believe there’s a special place in *you know where* for women who don’t support other women. But then I realized something: these women were silently reflecting their own career insecurities onto me. I had dared to take the leap and venture into the unknown, and every success mark I achieved created a further divide. Now 1 year in, I can genuinely say that I don’t care. This journey has connected me with so many like-minded female entrepreneurs who moonlight as cheerleaders, ones like @hey_mindi who loudly and emphatically lets you know she’s rooting for you, despite having never met you in person. I hope my young daughter will learn, first hand, that strong women don’t compete: we connect.
