@johnnyddavidson I would be pretty sure the RFL financed the London Crusaders (now Broncos). The owners went bust on the first week of the 1994 season and the RFL sent a representative down each game to oversee the cash. I was one of the volunteers who helped keep the show on the road.

Allegations that the RFL paid the Salford players yesterday, for Friday night’s game against Castleford to go ahead. When asked, the RFL didn’t deny it, just replied with “no comment”. Absolutely unprecedented and mad if they have paid them personally, and not the club’s owners.

@M_Shaw1 The reality of super league is anyone of these clubs can go to the wall without the benefactor!most clubs accounts show debt so technically there all living beyond there means to,the likes of Davey Beaumont McManus pulled out they would all be struggling!

Seems a lot of people were vying for the death of Salford today, which is disappointing. The answer to the question wasn't to let them disappear. But it's clear that significant changes need to be made at the club to make it sustainable, and whether they like it or not, that will happen now. It's a harsh reality, but the club has been living beyond its means.

This is fascinating reading. The RFU should be the richest governing body in world rugby union. Massive crowds at Test matches, around 340,000 participants, major national media coverage, free-to-air and pay TV deals, average attendance 15,358 per match in Premiership Rugby, private equity deal etc etc. What has all the money been spent on? theguardian.com/sport/2024/nov…
