What matters more for young players long-term? Learning how to score? Or learning how to guard, compete, communicate, and make winning plays when they are not scoring? I think the second one gets overlooked way too often.

A player who scores 20 but gives up straight-line drives all game did not have a complete game. Can you guard? Can you talk? Can you contain the ball? Can you finish possessions with rebounds? Points matter. But defense travels.

@3on3HoopsNation Don’t think about how you can get the ball, think about how you can help the ball.

Players: You do not need the ball to impact the game. Cut hard. Space correctly. Talk on defense. Set a screen. Crash the glass. Sprint back. Make the simple read. Coaches notice players who stay connected even when the play is not called for them.

3v3 Cutthroat is one of my favorite ways to end practice. Why? Players have to compete every possession. Score. Get a stop. Stay on. Lose focus for one rep and you are off. Simple game. High accountability. Better habits.

The fastest way to build confidence is to embarrass yourself enough times that you stop caring.

Analytics consistently show that paint touches lead to some of the highest-value offensive possessions. Not because every drive results in a layup... but because touching the paint collapses the defense. Paint touches create: • Kick-out threes • Drop-off passes • Fouls • Offensive rebounding opportunities • Rotation mistakes Instead of tracking points, start tracking paint touches per game. Teams that consistently pressure the paint force defenses into impossible decisions.

A lot of players do not need more freedom. They need better habits. Freedom without spacing becomes chaos. Freedom without decision-making becomes overdribbling. Freedom without accountability becomes bad basketball. Teach the principles, then let them play.

Players: Want your coach to trust you late in games? Guard without fouling. Know time and score. Take care of the ball. Make the simple read. Communicate early. Value every possession. Late-game trust is earned long before the final minute.

The “D1 or bust” mentality has never been more delusional than today. Do you know how good you have to be to beat out someone who has been playing in college for 3-4 years? Go JUCO: Develop + Play! Not to mention, JUCOs are set up for you to transfer!

Player development isn’t fancy. It’s consistent footwork, finishing, and decision‑making. The basics separate players.

Try this 3v3 defensive rule: No middle drives. If the offense gets middle, they get a bonus point. If the defense forces sideline or baseline and gets a stop, defense gets 2. Now players understand what they are trying to take away. #3x3basketball

Defense is not done when the shot goes up. The rep ends when your team gets the ball. Closeout.
Contain.
Help.
Recover.
Box out.
Rebound. That is why I like 3v3 defensive games. Players cannot hide.

Practice design matters. If players never have to read help, make decisions, communicate, or play through pressure in practice… Do not be surprised when they struggle to do it in games. The habits you want on game day have to show up in the reps you create.
