Over 150,000 signed a petition to impeach President Lee Jae-myung. The National Assembly refused to act. Delayed until 2028. In June 2025, South Korean citizens filed a national petition demanding Lee Jae-myung's impeachment through the National Assembly's official petition system. It gathered over 150,000 signatures. The threshold for committee referral is 50,000. The Legislation and Judiciary Committee extended the review period. Three times. First to November 2025. Then to May 2026. Then to May 29, 2028. May 29, 2028 is the final day of the 22nd National Assembly's term. When the Assembly dissolves, all pending petitions are automatically discarded. The petition was referred to the Petition Review Subcommittee on March 13, 2026. Less than two months later, the deadline was pushed to 2028. Under South Korea's National Assembly Act, review periods can be extended indefinitely for "special reasons." There is no cap. The numbers: - 214 petitions met the 50,000-signature threshold in this Assembly - 4 have been processed - A 1.9% action rate South Korea's petition system does not reject demands. It delays them until they expire. The system for hearing the people's voice is intact. The will to act on it is not.
