Today I watched this female Pileated Woodpecker employ a fascinating strategy to access a feeder she couldn’t perch on. Look at the tongue extension rapidly plucking seeds out, one lick at a time!

Yesterday I saw cliff swallows building nests, a beaver swimming in a pond, a least bittern, and many other amazing species.
Was I in some far off locale away from people?
No. I was walking distance from Downtown #Chicago at Nature Boardwalk @lincolnparkzoo 1/5 🧵

The correct answer is the female Black-necked Stilt has a brownish back whereas the male’s back is all black. Thanks everyone for playing and keep looking for female birds!

Most votes said lack of a black mustache means a female Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted) and that is correct!! Only the male has a mustache. This sex-specific trait is also visible in juvenile birds!
