Steven Guilbeault has devoted his career to protecting our environment and fighting climate change. As he prepares to step down from his seat in Parliament this summer, I want to thank him for his service to the people of Laurier—Sainte-Marie and Canada. Steven’s many contributions in civil society and public service have always been guided by his convictions and driven by his pursuit of a stronger, more inclusive, and more sustainable future. In government, he helped establish the 2022 Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework to protect 30% of Canada’s lands and waters, implemented Canada’s first emissions reduction plan, and championed landmark efforts to protect Canadian culture and identity, including establishing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. I am grateful for Steven’s leadership and expertise as a cabinet colleague and a member of our caucus. Our government shares a commitment to climate ambition, climate competitiveness and the preservation of Canada’s extraordinary natural heritage. We are advancing these missions with the same determination, a new spirit of partnership, and a renewed focus on results that will support Canadian families today and deliver for our kids and grandkids tomorrow. I wish Steven and his family all the best as he begins this next chapter.

A transnational Jewish-Italian mob network centered on Meyer Lansky and Santo Trafficante ran Cuba as a privatized extraction arm of US empire: gambling, laundering, narcotics, prostitution, political bribery. What the US could not openly run on its own border, the syndicate ran for it in Havana. Batista was on a $ 1.28-million-a-month retainer, delivered every Monday at noon. His development bank bankrolled half of every new mob casino. And this was not just gambling. Havana was a key node in the postwar heroin pipeline: Turkish opium, Marseille labs, Havana transshipment, New York distribution. By the late 1960s, that French Connection network supplied most of America’s heroin. Then Castro won. In January 1959 the casinos were smashed, the bosses fled or were detained, and Batista escaped with a fortune estimated around $300 million. The national lottery, once a graft channel, was converted into a housing fund. But the mob did not disappear. It was redeployed. Lansky’s lieutenant Doc Stacher later said Lansky offered to finance Castro’s assassination as early as 1959. By September 1960, the CIA was running the operation directly. The Agency hired Johnny Rosselli, Sam Giancana, and Santo Trafficante. The opening offer was $150,000. The weapon: poison pills from the CIA’s Technical Services Division. The 1975 Church Committee found concrete evidence of at least eight CIA plots against Castro between 1960 and 1965. The same Havana-Miami underworld that lost Cuba in 1959 became useful again as the deniable violence arm of US policy. Of the three mob figures the CIA hired, Giancana was murdered before he could testify to Congress. Rosselli was murdered after he did. Trafficante survived. The continuity is structural, not anecdotal: Tampa, Havana, Miami. Casinos became exile paramilitaries. Exile paramilitaries became lobby infrastructure. Jorge Mas Canosa, a Bay of Pigs veteran and CIA-radio figure, founded the Cuban American National Foundation in 1981 at the suggestion of Reagan's advisors. It was modeled on AIPAC and built to harden Cuba policy permanently. The lobby's most famous operative was Luis Posada Carriles: CIA-trained, Bay of Pigs veteran, Iran-Contra contractor under Oliver North, perpetrator of the 1976 mid-air bombing of Cubana Flight 455 (73 dead) and the 1997 Havana hotel bombings. By 1998, he had publicly named Mas Canosa as his financier. He died free in Miami in 2018. They did not just lobby. They wrote the laws. 1992: Cuban Democracy Act. 1996: Helms-Burton. 2019: Trump activates Title III, letting US claimants sue foreign firms using confiscated Cuban property. Today the legal afterlife of Batista’s Cuba runs through federal court: hotel chains, expropriation claims, embargo law, and Miami political power. Marco Rubio, now Secretary of State, is a product of that machine. When he says “freedom in Cuba,” hear the history underneath it: the old casino mobster class wants its island back

Forget Hitler. Forget Stalin. Forget Genghis Khan. the man who may have killed more people than any of them never commanded an army, never declared war, and died in his bed at 74 surrounded by flowers. His name was Leopold II, King of Belgium, and the country he destroyed wasn't even his own. in 1884, European powers sat in a room in Berlin and divided Africa between themselves like a map on a table. Leopold convinced them he wanted to help. he said he was bringing civilization, Christianity and free trade to the Congo. he called it a ‘humanitarian mission’. they gave him an area 76 times the size of Belgium as his personal property. what he actually did: he turned the entire Congo into a private rubber plantation. every village had a monthly quota, a fixed amount of rubber they had to deliver to his agents. if they didn't meet it, his private army... the Force Publique, raided the village. They took women hostage until the men returned with rubber. and to prove they hadn't wasted bullets, soldiers were required to bring back a human hand for every bullet fired. 💔 they collected baskets of hands. soldiers who missed shots or fired at animals, cut the hands off living people to make up the count. and evem when photographs circulated in European newspapers. Leopold said they were fake. the death toll was between 1 and 10 million people. the Congolese population was cut in half in a single generation! 20 million became 10 million. in 1908, after a global campaign led in part by a Black American journalist named E.D. Morel, Belgium forced Leopold to hand over the Congo. He made them pay him for it! He took the money and built parks, museums and grand boulevards across Brussels. He funded monuments. he donated public buildings to the Belgian people. Brussels is still beautiful today. Leopold died in 1909 and was given a state funeral, the crowds lining the streets booed his coffin...but his statues stood across Belgium for over a century. the last one in Brussels was pulled down in 2020. 111 years after his death...during the same week George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis. Somewhere in the Congo, a child lost their hands so Leopold could build a park he never visited, that park is still open today. you can visit it. it's beautiful. this image is a a Slave Father Gazing at His Daughter's Severed Hand and Foot, 1904. She was killed by Force Publique soldiers because his village didn't meet the rubber quota. Follow @WorldFactHQ

The West is so deep into supporting Holocaust/Nazi revisionism as a necessary byproduct of the Empire’s Cold War with Russia that nothing shocks anymore. If encouraging grubby Ukrainian fascism helps motivate them to kill Russians, then it’s good. Our media dutifully keeps omerta

🇷🇺 Dmitry Medvedev: "The drug-addicted freak and his Bandera-affiliated gang have provoked a harsh response from Russia with their terrorist attacks on children. Apparently, this was intentional. They needed to trigger massive strikes against the structures located in Kiev. Let everything burn! It's easier to beg for money and weapons this way. It's easier to steal. It's easier to make excuses. Especially since our strikes might help consolidate part of the electorate around the current despicable Kiev regime. Which, of course, is important for it in the upcoming elections in country 404. So what, not to strike at all to avoid provoking the strengthening of the neo-Nazi regime? No, of course not. We need to strike - as we are doing today, and even much more forcefully! After all, the ruins and gray ashes in the place of their capital's symbols demoralize the enemy no less than the loss of a battle standard."

Interesting piece by leading Russian expert Vasily Kashin who argues that the Russo-Ukrainian conflict will likely end up being frozen along the current frontline. He explains why hopes by the pro-war camp in Russia about a breakthrough on the frontline, successful escalation or “the fall of an anti-Russian regime” are vain and suggests that Russian achievements of the last four years of war are good enough for the time being. In a more sinister vein, he justifies the Russian aggression by suggesting that a weak and devastated Ukraine is better than a bigger and stronger “anti-Russian” Ukraine in the absence of the invasion. I remember Kashin being a staunch Putinist and enemy of the West even in the best of times. globalaffairs.ru/articles/chugu…

Putin announced retaliation for the overnight strike on a college dormitory in Starobelsk, on the territory of the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic, which he blamed on Ukraine. As of now, 6 people are reported dead and 15 are missing. Russia claims that 86 students aged 14-18 were sleeping in the college dormitory at the time of the strike.

I have just received information from my officials which details the appalling abuse of Canadians who were detained in Israel. These Canadians have now arrived in Türkiye. Global Affairs consular officials on the ground are ensuring that they receive urgent medical care as required so that they can return home as soon as possible. Canada unequivocally condemns the grave mistreatment of Canadians in Israel. Those responsible for this egregious abuse must be held accountable. We will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available.
