"Le heckin' mature story" The original trilogy is meant to reflect the tragic hero stories that were common in Greek mythology, as a lot of it took inspiration from those stories. The new stuff is just Millenial story telling that's common in so many movie games and getting pretty tired at this point. Also, the gore and nudity in the original trilogy was a reflection of the story and aesthetic they wanted to capture. Kratos was a borderline evil man on a mission to take revenge. He ended every game learning new things about his past and future, growing stronger, but still angry and seeking further vengeance. He also sought his own end. His story was a long drawn-out murder suicide. In GOW 3 he fails to kill himself and has to live with all the evil he's done. The "redeeming" of Kratos is the same "morally grey" slop that Millenials love in which you try and justify characters whose actions can't be redeemed. It's why things like the new Predator are suddenly human-like despite that never being the point. Millenials fail in understanding tragic heroes or natural forces. Their writing ends up being tiresome because they all fall into the same tropes. Trying to redeem Kratos in the way Nu-GoW did is missing the point of who Kratos was and what his story meant. It's just Millenial slop using an IP that was popular because otherwise it wouldn't sell as well, if at all considering TLOU2 flopped and movie games are starting to be too expensive vs revenue generated.

The whole point of the new games is that the playerbase should have matured with the character. If you grew up as an angsty teenager with the original Kratos, you should have matured with him.

Yeah, it's performative edgy shit. Kratos literally killed his own family and every single person who he feels wronged him in the originals. He was always meant to be a tragic character that was self-destructive. He wasn't meant to be cheered for. He had a good reason to do what he was doing, but he wasn't seen as a hero either. He's called "Dad of Soy" because the new Kratos has been de-edged in order to humanize him more. He's now a father figure who sometimes takes a backseat to other characters and is also raising a child. It completely misses the point of who he was originally. They basically took an IP and used it as a skinsuit for a movie game.
