@SnepOfTheWest It, to get out of trouble once or something along those lines, so that no one can easily weasel their way out of it, could also be that it was an off limits area for the base and that's why they were around there

@SnepOfTheWest It was shore patrol most likely, and in Japan it makes sense too, not too long ago we had an incident at "yellow brick" at Iwakuni, chances are they wanted to bring him in since he knew some of the process there and weren't buying that he was retired, because someone else used-

What were military police doing outside their jurisdiction, if he was not on base and therefore required to show ID? And if they were in their jurisdiction, why didn't he comply?

As a civilian no longer on active duty, he was not legally required to show ID when approached. The viral incident has sparked outrage and led to a temporary suspension of unilateral MP patrols in the area. A decorated veteran deserving better.
