During the 1970 Knicks-Lakers NBA Finals, 4 student protestors were shot and killed at Kent State University by the National Guard 4 days later in downtown Manhattan, 1,200 workers attacked 1,000 student protesters in what became known as the Hard Hat Riot Later that night in Madison Square Garden, a hobbled Willis Reed limped out of the tunnel for Game 7, made 2 shots and propelled the Knicks to their first NBA championship Immediately after the game, ABC cut away to an unusually late 10pm White House press conference President Nixon addressed the student protests which had intensified after he escalated the war in Vietnam to include Cambodia. One of the questions he was asked: “Mr. President, some Americans believe this country is heading for revolution, and others believe that crime and dissent and violent demonstrations are leading us to an era of repression. I wonder if you would give us your view of the state of American society and where it is heading.” Six hours later at 4 AM Nixon woke up and abruptly decided to visit the Lincoln Memorial to engage student protesters there. After talking to a small group of students for an hour around Lincoln’s statue, he went to the Capitol, sat in the empty chamber and made his valet give a speech to the cleaning staff. Back in New York, after one of the most politically and socially volatile weeks in modern American history, there would be no ticker-tape parade for the Knicks Just a small ceremony at Gracie Mansion

That's our member behind the wheel. He was pulled out of the cab and suffered shock and physical injury to his arm, back and head. The whole city is elated about our hometown team — and that includes drivers who watched the game last night at airport lots while waiting for the next fare, listened on their radios while cruising for the next job, and huddled at hotel lines with the same heart-stopping anxiety that turned into the most beautiful joy. Pulling the cab driver out of his seat, stomping on and shattering his hood turned our joy into a nightmare. When you see the yellow, do you not see the person behind the wheel? That's someone's spouse, child, parent or friend — a New Yorker. He wasn’t out there for a joy ride, he was working to make ends meet and to get his fellow New Yorkers home safely. Cabbies pay just to go to work. They pay for their cars — whether through loans or leases. Drivers need safety on the job, both in the quiet moments of ordinary days and in the middle of public celebration. Shame on anyone who turns these joyful moments into nightmares for fellow New Yorkers.
