I’m operating at Redbud Surgery Center this morning and wanted to talk about aesthetic flat closure. What it is, why it matters, and why we’re fighting to protect it. Today I revised a patient who previously had mastectomies where the incisions were simply closed. She wanted a smooth, flat chest contour, something she could wear a prosthetic with and feel confident wearing a fitted shirt without lumps or irregularities, That requires time, skill, and reconstruction beyond just closing the patient’s skin. For her reconstruction today, we spent over an hour carefully operating. We removed, moved, and reshaped the skin and fat of her chest, and we gently reshaped the sides of her chest to create as smooth a contour as possible. Sometimes this involves liposuction, but today that wasn’t needed. In this case I used the adjacent tissue transfer code This is real reconstructive surgery and it deserves real coverage. This is why chest wall reconstruction for aesthetic flat closure is included in the proposed WHCRA modernization, and why we’re working to refine the language to protect coverage of this procedure. Patients deserve access to all forms of reconstruction — including flat closure — and we’re committed to working with all stakeholders to make sure the law reflects that. More to come.

I wrote this piece for my high school alumni magazine and they called it "A Professor's Optimism" which I definitely had more of when I turned it in in August

Tough to put into words how much @BizNasty2point0 means to me and my family. The support over the past few years has been something i’ll hold with me forever. Now’s a great time to point out that we are raising money for the @5Under40 foundation. 100% of net proceeds will go to the organization. They are dedicated to providing funded medical, wellness, educational, and beauty services to women under the age of 40 who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have a BRCA mutation.  @5Under40 is the company who paid for my Fiancé’s wig and gave her all the confidence she needed to fight this awful disease. They reached out to us. They lent a helping hand when we needed it most. So its time to return the favor. Did you know 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their life? Did you know women under the age of 45 have to pay out of pocket for a mamogram? Insurance doesn’t cover it. Rates are sky rocketing amongst young woman and WAY more can be done to help. Please consider buying some merch as i promise it will make a difference in a young women’s life and if you’re a lady…go get checked, it could save your life.

My mother died in an unexpected accident at her home on Friday night in Baltimore. I want to take a brief moment to honor her life. She was admitted into the first ever female class at John’s Hopkins (a huge accomplishment, because before that, it was men only). She ran a private eye surgery practice for years. She went to Africa multiple times to operate on entire villages to literally heal the blind. She helped anyone who didn’t have money - despite never having much of her own. She gave her life to Christ when she was 42, and never looked back. She lived in God’s grace. For the few who knew her, you know she was incredibly intelligent, kind, and unyielding in her faith and values. She also loved me fiercely despite her difficulty showing it. But she was always proud. Always available. Always genuine. And truly did not care what anyone thought besides Jesus. Also… She was a great stay at home movie date. We’d get double features on the weekends. And I’d get to pick one candy. She was a great cook and liberal with her use of butter. I only found out as an adult that the proper way to make Mac n cheese was not simply “melt a stick of butter then add noodles & powder.” This method also applied to eggs, steak, most other things worth eating. She could hold her liquor like a champ and was always down for a good time. On her good days - she was honestly wonderful to be around. That being said, she was also a terrible driver. She was disorganized, clumsy, could not remember where she put her keys, wallet, phone, shoes or whatever she was looking for - ever. And she’d argue about anything. And that was Florence. No matter what you thought of her, she was consistent. And she bent for no one. Florence was a ball of goodness that struggled to deal with the world around her. She suffered her own demons. And near the end was in great mental and physical pain. Now that she has passed, her pain has ended. And she can finally reunite with her Creator. I hope her worldview is right and she is welcomed home in His arms with a message we’d all want: “well done my good and faithful servant.” Maman, I will miss you.

On January 7th, 2025 I shared a video, after I was asked to call UnitedHealthcare from the operating room to answer administrative questions about the patient who was having surgery to treat breast cancer. Despite my efforts, they denied her stay. UnitedHealthcare didn’t stop at calling me during surgery. Now, they’ve sent me a legal threat—and even worse? They ended up denying my cancer patient’s hospital stay. Exactly what I was afraid would happen. Staying overnight after major surgery isn’t optional—it’s medically necessary. But UnitedHealthcare decided they know better than the doctors caring for the patient. When they called me while I was operating, I knew that if I didn’t step out and respond immediately, they might deny her stay—leaving her with a massive bill. So, with another surgeon in the OR, I scrubbed out and called them back. But after all of that? They denied her stay anyway. And instead of fixing their broken system, they sent me a legal threat for speaking out. I’m sharing their response in full, letting their words speak for themselves. Let me be clear: I stand by everything I said. I told the truth. I was honest about what’s happening in our healthcare system. And I will not be silenced by legal threats when it comes to advocating for my patients and my ability to care for them. Denying an overnight stay that a doctor orders is dangerous. The doctor caring for the patient should be able to make these decisions without delay, pressure, or harassment. If I don’t speak up, I lose—my integrity, my voice, and the opportunity to make a difference. And while it’s intimidating to receive a letter like this from a company as powerful as UnitedHealthcare, I know where I stand. I am a woman taking care of women affected by breast cancer. I do this work with all of my heart, and I will continue to speak up for my patients—because they deserve better. I ask you to follow along, share this story, and have these conversations in your own communities. I know I’m not the only one dealing with this, and real change will take all of us telling our stories and standing up for what’s right. I’m here for it. Are you?

My beloved wife Jenny fell asleep in God yesterday as I held her hand. I have loved her with my whole heart for 20 years. Wife, Mother, Friend. The most kind, illumined, graceful person I have ever met. As sweet behind closed doors as she was everywhere else. Vivacious, curious, intelligent, beautiful, and full to overflowing with light and love. She has taught us that the glory of God is a person fully alive, awake, and joyful. She fought cancer bravely and beautifully for almost 13 years, and now may she rest in peace with her Lord Jesus.
