POLICE Constable Norman Mwongera survived 17 days Inside Boni forest with a gunshot wound and without food. The ordeal began on January 7, 2021. Norman Mwongera, an officer with the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), was part of a security team patrolling the Boni Forest in Lamu County near the Somali border. Their vehicle was ambushed by Al-Shabaab militants between Milimani and Baure. During the heavy exchange of fire, Mwongera was shot in the leg. In the chaos of the ambush, he was separated from his colleagues and forced to retreat deep into the thick, expansive forest to avoid capture or execution. For 17 days, Police Constable Norman Mwongera survived alone in the Boni Forest. He had no proper food and was seriously injured, but he ate wild fruits, trusted his survival skills, and kept going because he wanted to see his family again. While everyone feared he might not make it, Mwongera stayed hidden and kept moving until he finally reached safety on January 23, 2021.
