That loss sucks, but some good things for the #WhiteSox are crystallizing:
-I’m not deterred by that loss at all. The Cubs are SUPPOSED to win games like that. The only reason it wasn’t close is because Jordan Hicks imploded. He likely won’t be on this team the next time we meet. But better pitchers—and hitters—will.
-Colson Montgomery is a certified stud. Getz should prioritize his extension with Murakami’s. Vargas should be close behind, but Colson is on a pace to become irrationally unaffordable. All things (and tools) considered, he might be the best hitter on the team. Lock him in with Mune right at the start of this core’s ascent before you can’t anymore.
-Games like this are great reminders that no roster spot can be given freely. This is just speculation, but logically it feels like Getz and Venable are putting their fringe guys through the wringer intentionally. That means Benintendi, Peters, Quero, Romo, Grichuk, Hill, half the bullpen… even Fedde and Kay, and to some extent Newcomb and Hicks, represent a clear attempt to eat innings and get the roster ready for 2027… they’re ALL going to be put through the paces on purpose—as often as possible—to earn their keep, and the ones who will keep their spot are becoming more clear every game. It stings in games like today, but it will be for the better down the stretch, and especially in 2027.
-Braden and Teel will make the lineup card SO much harder to get through for opposing pitchers. Right now this team only has 5 everyday bats that are really worth worrying about (Mune, Colson, Vargas, Antonacci, and Meidroth). Soon it will be 7 with those 2 in the mix. By mid-2027, it’ll be 9 with Cholowsky and Bonemer. I see the vision.
-We’re going to learn a lot about this team over the next 3 series: Cubs, Mariners, Giants. They’re the last non-division opponents for a while, as we play 7 games against the Twins over 2 series and 3 against the scuffling Tigers in the middle. If we get healthy and can win 5 of the next 9 before the division sprint, the fat is gonna get trimmed off.
-I don’t understand the Will Venable hate. I think he’s made some questionable choices early but, again, it feels purposeful. I think the guys love him and he’s doing what he can with the guys he has. As the roster improves, so will his results.
-This team will likely have to add via trade if they keep a .500 pace, and I truly think they can and will. A starter will be necessary and at least one more reliever, if not two. But ultimately I do wonder if a true CF or DH becomes a target too.
-Regardless, we’re gonna be alright. This is a good team and it’s getting better. And with all the shit their fans are talking tonight, they better fucking SWEEP us because I’m keeping receipts and they barely beat a team with half a roster. Keep your chin up. We’re improving rapidly. And this time next year? Things might not be so “friendly” for the North Siders.
